Tesla’s decision to close order books for the least expensive grade of the Cybertruck has left many potential buyers perplexed. The base price for the Cybertruck has skyrocketed from $79,990 to $99,990 in less than nine months, a significant increase of $20,000. This price hike has understandably left prospective buyers astounded and questioning the reasoning behind it. On the other hand, range estimates have taken a dip, with the advertised range of the dual-motor AWD dropping from 350 miles to 318 miles. Real-world driving experiences from owners have even reported achieving ranges in the 200s, adding to the confusion surrounding the vehicle.

To address the range deficiencies and try to reach the impressive 500-mile range initially promised, Tesla has unveiled a range-extending battery that can be installed in the truck bed. This supplemental battery is estimated to cost $16,000 and will need to be structurally mounted at a Tesla Service Center for safety during crashes. Tesla is currently accepting non-refundable deposits of $500 for reservations of the battery pack.

However, Tesla’s lack of transparency continues, as the automaker has not disclosed the exact battery capacity or the actual mileage the pack will provide. Descriptions on Tesla’s website mention a “470+ Total Mi. Range (Est.)” and “more than 450 miles of range without impacting accessory capability.” It is uncertain whether these numbers will hold true or change as the final details are revealed. Inside EVs attempted to calculate the potential range based on the Cybertruck’s battery efficiency and estimated that the bed-mounted pack could provide around 130 miles from approximately 47 kWh of energy. Furthermore, the pack takes up a significant amount of space, occupying one-third of the six-foot by four-foot bed and potentially weighing around 660 pounds. This raises concerns about the practicality and utility of the truck, as it would be challenging to remove and store a quarter ton of battery when not in use.

Interested buyers will have to wait until early next year for the pack to enter production and for Tesla to announce the final cost and range specifications. Those who have put down a $500 deposit are essentially betting on Tesla delivering on its promises. If the pack ends up being priced at $20,000 and only adds a modest 110 miles of range, customers may feel disillusioned and regret their deposits.
