Tesla Cybertruck’s Towing Range Falls Short Compared to Model X

The Tesla Cybertruck has been praised for its towing capacity and off-roading abilities. However, recent testing by Bowlus, a high-end trailer builder, revealed that the truck may not have the best range when pulling a load. In fact, one of Tesla’s SUVs, the Model X, outperformed the Cybertruck in terms of towing range.

Bowlus CEO Geneva Long shared the test results on LinkedIn. The Model X achieved better real-world range numbers while towing an EV-friendly Bowlus Volterra trailer weighing 3,250 pounds. It covered 71% of its estimated 330-mile range, which is equivalent to 235 miles. On the other hand, the dual-motor Cybertruck only managed to reach 160 miles, or 47% of its claimed 340-mile range. This means that if you’re planning to tow a trailer over a long distance, the Cybertruck’s limited range could become a hassle.

It’s worth noting that the Cybertruck’s towing range isn’t significantly different from other electric trucks tested, such as the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning. However, what’s interesting is that the Model X, which is almost a decade old, performed much better in this aspect. Bowlus didn’t provide an explanation for this discrepancy, but one factor could be the Cybertruck’s heavier weight of 1,300 pounds compared to the Model X.

Since Bowlus released these test results, there have been multiple reports of early-adopter problems with the Cybertruck. Some owners have claimed that their trucks died within minutes of delivery, while others have expressed concerns about its build quality and ability to handle typical truck tasks. These issues, combined with the unique design of the truck’s bed, lackluster accessory tent, and instances of surface rust, have somewhat tarnished the Cybertruck’s reputation. Additionally, its high price tag hasn’t helped its case. Despite these concerns, there have been instances of the Cybertruck selling for exorbitant prices at auctions, such as the “Cyberbeast” trim that recently sold for $262,500.

In conclusion, while the Tesla Cybertruck may have impressive towing capacity, its towing range falls short compared to the Model X. The Bowlus test results have shed light on this limitation, as well as other potential issues faced by early adopters of the Cybertruck. Although the truck’s unique design has garnered attention, it remains to be seen whether it can truly live up to Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s vision of a groundbreaking pickup truck.
