Tesla Recalls Over 9,000 Model X SUVs for Roof Trim Issue

Tesla has issued a recall for 9,136 Model X SUVs due to a trim on the roof that could separate and increase the risk of a crash. This recall is notable because it requires owners to visit a Tesla service center for a physical fix, unlike most of Tesla’s recalls that can be resolved with software updates. The recall was prompted by a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report, highlighting the potential danger of the trim separating from the vehicle.

The affected Teslas are all 2016 model year Model X vehicles. The issue lies with the cosmetic appliques located at the front and center of the roof. These appliques are adhered to the vehicle using urethane. However, if the applique-to-urethane interface lacks primer, the adhesion may weaken over time, leading to the separation of the applique from the vehicle. This separation poses a risk to both the driver and other road users.

Interestingly, this is not the first time these Model X vehicles have been recalled for the same issue. In 2020, Tesla issued a recall for the roof trim problem, but the fix implemented at that time was not sufficient to fully resolve the issue. As a result, Tesla is now requiring owners to bring their vehicles back to the service center for further inspection and reattachment of the trim pieces.

Owners of the affected Model X SUVs will need to visit a Tesla service center, where the roof trim adhesion will be tested, and the trim pieces will be reattached to ensure the safety of the vehicles. The company has assured owners that they will not incur any costs associated with this recall.

The recall comes after approximately 170 reports and claims related to this issue were received by Tesla. Fortunately, there have been no reported crashes or injuries resulting from the problem. Nonetheless, Tesla is taking proactive measures to address the potential safety risk and ensure the well-being of its customers.

This recall serves as a reminder that even cutting-edge technology and advanced software cannot eliminate the possibility of physical defects in vehicles. Tesla’s willingness to recall and rectify issues demonstrates its commitment to customer safety and satisfaction. By taking these proactive steps, Tesla is maintaining its reputation as a responsible automaker and reinforcing its dedication to producing high-quality electric vehicles.

As Tesla continues to innovate and push the boundaries of automotive technology, it is crucial for the company to address any potential safety concerns promptly. Recalls like these not only protect drivers and passengers but also contribute to the overall trust and confidence in electric vehicles. Tesla’s commitment to fixing issues and ensuring customer safety sets a positive example for the industry as a whole.
