The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA 35: A Capable and Surprisingly Fun Subcompact Crossover

**The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA 35: More Than Meets the Eye**

**1. A Higher Price Tag Than Expected**

At first glance, the $73,460 price tag on the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 may seem exorbitant for a subcompact crossover. However, it’s important to note that the base price is a more reasonable $56,450. Although there is a more powerful AMG 45 version available, it seems to have disappeared after the recent refresh. So, if you’re looking for a capable and fun-to-drive AMG without breaking the bank, the GLA 35 is a solid choice.

**2. Luxury Seats that Stand Out**

One area where you might want to splurge is the $3,250 AMG Performance Seats PLUS package. These seats are so impressive that they could easily belong in a high-performance sports car. Combined with the striking “Classic Red” leather upholstery for an additional $1,450, these seats create a jaw-dropping moment every time you step into the car. Despite their aggressive styling, they offer comfort for long journeys and provide outstanding support during spirited driving. Heated, cooled, adjustable, and fully powered, these seats are a standout feature in the GLA 35.

**3. A Riot to Drive**

Under the hood of the GLA 35 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The combination of this engine and transmission is diabolically good, providing rapid shifts and immense fun. The DCT is so good that you’ll find yourself using the manual mode most of the time, enjoying the quick and precise gear changes. The 302-horsepower engine delivers a hearty dose of turbo spool and intake hilarity, making it one of the most characterful 2.0-liter turbos on the market.

**4. Impressive Hybrid Technology**

One of the standout features of the refreshed GLA 35 is its 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Mercedes claims that this system can provide a 13-horsepower boost under certain driving conditions. However, what truly stands out is the seamless start/stop system, a feature often lacking in smaller vehicles. Thanks to the AMG Ride Control adaptive dampers, the GLA 35 also offers a respectable ride quality, even on rougher roads.

**5. Trustworthy Cornering Abilities**

While you might expect a bit of body roll in Comfort mode, switching to Sport Plus mode reveals the GLA 35’s true potential. The Continental SportContact summer tires provide excellent grip, allowing the crossover to navigate corners with surprising composure and stability. Although the steering lacks feedback, the GLA 35 quickly starts to feel like a taller and slightly more substantial hot hatch. It exceeds expectations and leaves a smile on the driver’s face.

**6. A Downgrade in Infotainment Controls**

One area where the GLA 35 falls short is in the infotainment department. The removal of the touchpad and reliance solely on the touchscreen leaves a big, useless space in the center console. The previous touchpad offered a more intuitive way to navigate the MBUX system, which now relies solely on touch controls. The new system functions fine, but the elimination of the touchpad feels like a downgrade in both usability and aesthetics.

**7. Aesthetically Charming**

Despite some questionable design elements, such as the large wing and front splitter, the $1,550 AMG Aerodynamics Package adds a certain charm to the GLA 35. These additions, along with the 20-inch wheels, draw attention and turn heads wherever you go. While some might find the look a bit childish, the combination of the aerodynamic package and the right paint color would make this little crossover even more visually exciting.

**8. Finding its Niche**

The GLA 35’s place in the market is a bit perplexing. Buyers looking for utility might find better options in the boxier GLB, while those seeking a fun and “cheap” AMG experience might prefer the CLA 35. However, the GLA 35 could be a great choice for well-to-do parents sending their car-enthusiast child off to college. With its all-wheel drive, decent storage space, and enjoyable driving dynamics, it offers a practical yet exciting option for young drivers. Despite its unclear niche, the GLA 35 retains enough character to proudly wear the AMG badge.
