Cargo Space Comparison: Acura MDX vs. Honda Pilot

When it comes to three-row SUVs, cargo space is a crucial consideration for buyers. The Acura MDX and Honda Pilot, both sharing the same platform, offer unique features that make them stand out in the market. One such feature is the removable second-row middle seat, which provides flexibility for buyers who don’t want to compromise between maximum capacity and pass-through convenience. Additionally, both SUVs boast a two-level cargo floor behind the third row, which is always a benefit during luggage tests.

However, a closer look reveals that the MDX’s cargo space falls short compared to the Pilot. The MDX has two cargo volume specifications for behind the third row: 16.3 and 18.1 cubic-feet. In contrast, the Pilot offers more space with 18.6 cubic-feet when the floor is in place and an even larger capacity of either 22.4 or 21.8 cubic-feet with the floor in its lower position.

During a luggage test, it became evident that the MDX’s cargo area is narrower than the Pilot’s. The bags that could comfortably fit in the Pilot could not be accommodated head-to-head in the MDX. This narrowness of the MDX’s cargo area reduces its capacity compared to the Pilot.

Taking into account the floor stored in its lower position, the MDX was able to accommodate two medium suitcases, one large suitcase, and a smaller roll-aboard bag alongside a fancy overnight bag. On the other hand, the Pilot proved capable of fitting all bags except for the fancy overnight bag. Its height and boxiness advantage further highlighted its superior cargo capacity.

By removing the floor, the MDX gained an inch or so of space and allowed for the inclusion of a green roll-aboard bag instead of the fancy overnight bag. This small difference showcased the impact of removing the floor on the MDX’s overall cargo capacity.

Comparing the MDX’s cargo space to its competitors in the luxury three-row SUV segment, it emerges as a solid second-best. The Lexus TX, the reigning king of the segment in terms of cargo space, can accommodate all the bags comfortably. However, the Volvo XC90 only managed to fit the four smallest bags, the Cadillac XT6 could only accommodate a blue/green suitcase and a black roll-aboard bag, and the Mazda CX-90 matched the Volvo’s capacity. Additionally, the Lexus GX, while exceeding expectations, still falls short in comparison.

Ultimately, the Acura MDX impresses as a strong contender in its segment, offering commendable cargo space that places it ahead of many competitors. While it may not outshine the reigning champion, it provides a favorable balance of practicality and luxury.
