The All-New Cupra Leon: A Standalone Performance Hatchback

Cupra, the performance arm of Seat, is making a bold statement with its new Cupra Leon. The company wants to establish the Leon as a standalone product with its own unique driving character, technology, and options. To achieve this, Cupra has given the Leon a new design language with a shark-nose front end and triangular matrix LEDs. The company has also taken an environmentally conscious approach to performance by using more sustainable materials during manufacturing. Additionally, Cupra has introduced new interior technology to further differentiate the Leon from its counterparts.

Competition in the performance car segment is fierce, with brands like Volkswagen, Honda, and Hyundai offering their own high-performance models. The new Cupra Leon aims to grab a larger share of this market by offering a brand new 329bhp engine and a 268bhp plug-in hybrid option. Customers can choose between front- or four-wheel drive, pure combustion or electrically assisted power. However, the previous models of the Leon were criticized for lacking involvement and featuring a hybrid engine that didn’t feel at home in a performance car.

To simplify its engine and trim lineup, Cupra has introduced seven trim levels for the new Leon. The hatchback is always front-wheel drive and powered by a four-cylinder engine, with options ranging from a 2.0-liter with 295bhp to a 1.5-liter petrol available with 148bhp or 268bhp in plug-in hybrid form. The estate version offers the choice of the front-wheel-drive hybrid or the more powerful four-wheel-drive 2.0-liter engine.

Inside, the new Cupra Leon features a 12.9-inch infotainment screen and improved material quality. The interior offers a roomy cabin with ample rear leg and headroom, making it a comfortable hatchback for daily use. Cupra has also focused on using more environmentally friendly materials in the interior, such as recycled vegan textile and environmentally conscious leather.

When it comes to performance, the new Cupra Leon delivers strong in-gear performance, thanks to its electric motor. The plug-in hybrid version produces 268bhp and 310lb ft of torque, allowing for quick acceleration. The six-speed DSG automatic transmission shifts quickly and smoothly, enhancing the driving experience. However, some reviewers have noted that the engine note is dull and doesn’t match the sporting intentions of the car.

In terms of ride and handling, the Cupra Leon offers a supple ride and impressive rolling refinement. The suspension is well-tuned to soak up bumps, and the chassis provides a balanced and controlled driving experience. However, the steering has been criticized for lacking feedback and feeling slightly lifeless.

In terms of running costs, the new Cupra Leon offers competitive pricing compared to its rivals. The starting price for the standard Leon V1 is £30,765, making it £2,335 cheaper than the previous cheapest Leon. The most expensive variant, the 329bhp Leon estate, is priced at £49,825.

Overall, the Cupra Leon is a strong performer in its segment, offering impressive rolling refinement, distinctive looks, and strong in-gear performance. However, some reviewers have noted that the car doesn’t quite do enough to justify itself as a standalone Cupra model. It shares many similarities with the regular Seat Leon and lacks some dynamic distinctiveness. Nevertheless, the Cupra Leon remains a practical and well-designed hatchback that competes well with other models in its class.
