The Ariel Nomad 2: A Brilliant Second Coming for the Ultimate Off-Roader

The Ariel Motor Company of Somerset can be credited with opening up the world of fast cars with long suspension travel. In 2015, they took their lightweight Atom track-day blade and transformed it into the Ariel Nomad, a jacked-up, off-road capable vehicle. The Nomad quickly gained recognition due to Ariel’s reputation for building high-quality cars. Now, nine years later, the Nomad Mk2 has been released and it is even more impressive than its predecessor.

The Nomad 2 features several updates and improvements. The chassis is now 60% stiffer thanks to larger diameter tubes used in its construction. The engine has been upgraded from a 2.0-liter turbo unit from Honda to a 2.3-liter turbo unit from Ford. This new engine delivers 260bhp and 284lb ft of torque, with the option to increase power to 305bhp and 382lb ft. Despite its power, the Nomad 2 is still relatively lightweight at just 715kg, giving it a power-to-weight ratio comparable to a Porsche 911 Turbo S.

The suspension has also been enhanced, with extra travel and ride height compared to the previous model. The double wishbone suspension is controlled by fixed-rate K-Tech dampers and Eibach springs, with the option of softer Bilstein dampers or three-way adjustable Öhlins TTX dampers. The Nomad 2 retains the playful and agile handling of its predecessor, with a slight improvement in precision.

Inside the cabin, the Nomad 2 offers a comfortable and spacious driving position. The seat is fixed in place, but the driving position is similar to that of the Atom. The dashboard is more substantial than before, and there is a color LCD screen. The overall design of the Nomad 2 remains true to the original, with a focus on simplicity and functionality.

In terms of performance, the Nomad 2 is a joy to drive. The Ford engine delivers a progressive and torque-rich power delivery, making it easy to control and enjoy. The car is dynamically balanced and offers precise and forgiving handling. The suspension travel allows for a comfortable and controlled ride, even on challenging B-roads.

The Nomad 2 comes with a high level of customization options, allowing buyers to tailor the car to their preferences. However, this level of customization comes at a price, with the base model starting at £68,000 and the tested model costing £85,538. Despite the high price tag, Ariels have a reputation for holding their value well.

Overall, the Ariel Nomad 2 is a truly exceptional vehicle. It combines the thrill of off-road driving with the precision and performance of a sports car. It offers a unique and rewarding driving experience that is unmatched by any other car on the market. With its impressive capabilities and undeniable charm, the Nomad 2 is a car that is sure to make a lasting impression.
