Audi A6 Goes Electric: Taking on BMW and Mercedes with Power and Range
The Audi A6, one of Audi’s most important models, has undergone a significant transformation for its sixth generation. Unlike its primary rivals, the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class, which still have combustion engines available, Audi has made the bold decision to transition the A6 to solely electric power. Visually, the new Audi A6 E-tron maintains the sleek and muscular proportions of the concept car that was unveiled three years ago. Underneath its stylish exterior, the Audi A6 E-tron is built on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, which it shares with the Q6 E-tron. This platform offers 800V electrics, providing a range of benefits in terms of battery performance and powertrain options. Speaking of range, the A6 E-tron Sportback claims an impressive range of over 466 miles, surpassing the range of its competitors, the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE. Even the estate-bodied A6 E-tron Avant, which has a less aerodynamic shape, still manages a respectable claimed range of 447 miles.
Achieving these impressive figures is thanks in part to the A6 E-tron’s new and more efficient 94.9kWh battery, specifically designed for the PPE platform. This battery consists of 12 modules and 180 cells, utilizing a new lithium-ion nickel-manganese-cobalt makeup that boasts a 30% improvement in cell density compared to previous Audi models. Additionally, Audi has announced that a 10-module 79kWh battery will become available shortly after the A6’s launch.
Charging the A6 E-tron is convenient and versatile. It can be charged at 11kW using a domestic AC supply through either of the car’s rear charging ports. However, the driver’s side port also supports DC fast charging at rates of up to 270kW, allowing for quick charging on the go. Audi plans to upgrade the A6 to support 22kW AC charging in the future, further enhancing charging capabilities.
When it comes to powertrain options, the Audi A6 E-tron offers two choices. The Performance model features a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor with 362bhp, allowing for a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds. The S6 model adds an asynchronous motor on the front axle, providing four-wheel drive and a combined output of 496bhp. With the launch control function, the S6 can temporarily boost its power to 543bhp, resulting in a 0-62mph time of just 3.9 seconds.
In terms of driving dynamics, the new A6 has been designed with a focus on “first-class” comfort. The Performance model comes with traditional steel springs, while the S6 benefits from adaptive air suspension. Top-spec models actively adjust their ride height while driving to improve aerodynamic performance and range. Additionally, the suspension lifts when the car is parked and unlocked to facilitate easier entry.
Inside the A6 E-tron, drivers will find a layout similar to the new A5 and Q6 models. The centerpiece is a large OLED screen divided into an 11.9-inch instrument panel and a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen. An optional 10.9-inch passenger display is also available. For models equipped with the optional camera side mirrors, a pair of small displays bookend the dashboard, providing a seamless and technologically advanced experience.
The Audi A6 E-tron is expected to start deliveries by the end of this year. While pricing has yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated that the A6 will be competitively priced against its BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE counterparts, which start at £67,695 and £69,105 respectively.
