“The Audi A6 Goes Electric: Taking on BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE with Impressive Range and Power”

The Audi A6 has made a bold move by transitioning to solely electric power for its sixth generation, setting itself apart from its primary rivals, the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE. This decision reflects Audi’s commitment to sustainability and the growing demand for electric vehicles in the market. The new A6 E-tron stays true to the concept of the same name that was shown three years ago, with some minor restyling to accommodate production requirements.

One of the standout features of the A6 E-tron is its impressive range. The top-of-the-line Sportback model boasts a claimed range of over 466 miles, surpassing the official figures of its competitors, the i5 and EQE. Even the estate-bodied A6 E-tron Avant offers a respectable claimed range of 447 miles. These impressive figures are made possible by a new and more efficient 94.9kWh battery, specifically designed for the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture. Audi has also announced that a 79kWh battery will be available shortly after the A6’s launch.

The A6’s charging capabilities are also noteworthy. It can be recharged at 11kW on a domestic AC supply through its charging ports located on each rear haunch. The driver’s side port can also handle DC charging at rates of up to 270kW. Audi has plans to upgrade the AC charging to 22kW later in the car’s life cycle, providing even faster charging times.

In terms of powertrains, the A6 E-tron will offer two options. The entry-level Performance model features a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor with 362bhp, allowing for a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds. The S6 model adds an asynchronous motor on the front axle, providing four-wheel drive and a combined output of 496bhp. With the launch control function, the S6 can temporarily boost its power to 543bhp, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds. The RS6 will also join the electric lineup, offering even stronger performance than its V8 predecessor.

Dynamically, the new A6 prioritizes “first-class” comfort, with the Performance model featuring traditional steel springs and the S6 equipped with adaptive air suspension. Top-spec models have the ability to adjust their ride height on the move, improving aerodynamic performance and range. They also lift when parked and unlocked to facilitate easier entry.

Inside the A6, drivers will find a layout similar to the new A5 and Q6 models, featuring a large OLED screen divided into an 11.9in instrument panel and a 14.5in infotainment touchscreen. An optional 10.9in passenger display is also available. Additionally, models equipped with camera side “mirrors” have small displays on each end of the dashboard.

The A6 E-tron is set to be available for deliveries by the end of this year. While prices have yet to be confirmed, it is expected to be competitively priced against its i5 and EQE rivals, which start at £67,695 and £69,105 respectively. With its impressive range, powerful performance, and luxurious features, the Audi A6 E-tron is poised to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle market.
