The Audi Q6 E-tron, the first car developed on the PPE platform created in collaboration with Porsche, is making waves in the electric car market. The PPE platform is specifically designed for premium electric vehicles, setting it apart from the more volume-oriented brands under the VW Group. This platform has been in development for six years, a significant amount of time compared to the speed at which Chinese car firms develop new EVs.
In the market for premium mid-sized electric SUVs, the Q6 E-tron and its cousin, the Porsche Macan Electric, occupy a unique niche. While there are several options available in this segment, such as the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, BMW iX3, Jaguar I-Pace, and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, none of them quite fulfill the requirements of fussy British buyers. The Q6 E-tron sets itself apart with its Audi branding and design, offering a more premium experience.
Audi is also introducing a hot version of the Q6 E-tron called the SQ6 E-Tron. However, it feels more like a trim level than a stand-alone model. The SQ6 E-tron comes with a more powerful dual-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain, delivering 510bhp in overboost mode. It also features adaptive air suspension, sport seats, sport badges, and different alloys.
Looking ahead, Audi has plans to release a full-fat Audi RS Q6 E-tron model, which is expected to share the powerful 600bhp powertrain from the Porsche Macan Turbo.
In terms of design and styling, the Q6 E-tron resembles other Audi products, with its familiar Audi nose and split headlights. The profile showcases flared arches and a sleek side profile that hints at the slimline battery pack. Charging ports are conveniently located on both sides of the car.
Inside, the Q6 E-tron offers a well-designed and high-quality interior. The touchpoints are trimmed with upmarket materials, and the switchgear is well thought out. The infotainment package is comprehensive, with easy-to-use screens and displays. The head-up display is particularly impressive, providing clear and legible information, including real-time sat nav data.
When it comes to performance, the Q6 E-tron delivers impressive power and acceleration. With a combined output of 396bhp and a well-tuned power delivery system, the Q6 E-tron feels fast and responsive. It offers different methods of regenerative braking, including full-on one-pedal mode and auto mode. The handling is also commendable, with light and communicative steering.
In terms of ride and handling, the Q6 E-tron’s air suspension provides great ride comfort, especially on unpaved roads and older Tarmac. It excels in dealing with potholes, gliding over them effortlessly. However, it’s important to note that air suspension will only be available on SQ6 models in the UK market.
In terms of running costs, the Q6 E-tron offers fast charging speeds, thanks to its 800V electricals. It can charge from 10-80% in just 21 minutes, provided the infrastructure permits it. The battery pack is designed for efficiency, with various technologies employed to minimize energy wastage. While official figures for real-world mpkWh are yet to be tested, unofficial tests have shown figures of around 3.0mpkWh.
Overall, the Audi Q6 E-tron is a technically brilliant and well-positioned electric SUV. Its unique PPE platform sets it apart from other electric vehicles on the market, offering a premium experience and excellent performance. However, some may find it expensive, especially when compared to the Porsche Macan Electric Turbo. The SQ6 E-tron, while offering a more powerful option, may not be different enough from the regular Q6 E-tron to justify its higher price.
