Driving the New Ford Capri EV: A Controversial Coupe-SUV with Impressive Performance and Promising Ride Quality

The Ford Capri EV, a new semi-sporting coupe-SUV launched by Ford, has been generating controversy since its recent release. As I slid into the front passenger seat of this eye-catching vehicle, painted in a bold yellow hue, I couldn’t help but admire its big and tall design. Despite the controversy surrounding its size, the Capri EV exuded a practical and quality feel, reminiscent of other Ford models like the Explorer. This spacious vehicle had a minimum of showy architecture and a distinctly “Fordish” appeal.

My driver for the day was none other than Paul Swift, a well-known stunt specialist and former auto test champion. Swift was no stranger to performing at a high level in front of crowds, making him the perfect driver for our task: a timed run up the Goodwood Festival of Speed hillclimb. With a 335bhp 4WD EV and 402lb ft of torque at our disposal, Swift aimed to complete the climb in under 70 seconds.

As we received the green signal, the Capri EV burst out of the blocks with the instant power typical of electric vehicles. Surprisingly, there was no squeal from the four driven tires as we raced up the start-line straight. Approaching the first fast right-hander, with tens of thousands of eyes watching, I wondered if we would make it around the corner. Thankfully, we did. The car displayed a bit of well-contained body roll in the cornering pic, but Swift’s expert handling kept us stable and secure.

As we continued our ascent, I was impressed by how planted and quick the car felt. It stayed in line, which surprised my driver, as he was accustomed to inducing oversteer with a powerful hydraulic handbrake. We also managed to avoid two wheels, a specialty of Paul Swift. The Capri EV demonstrated a docile yet nimble nature, providing a quiet and comfortable ride. I took the opportunity to evaluate the ride quality, a personal obsession of mine when it comes to electric vehicles. Based on this short passenger ride, the Capri seemed to have a supple and promising ride, further boosted by its estimated range of 350 miles on a single charge.

Of course, the controversial nature of the Capri EV was not lost on the spectators. People couldn’t resist poking their heads into our windows to share their opinions. However, I firmly believe that Ford can call it a Capri if they want to. This larger, differently styled vehicle with a familiar name has garnered attention and consciousness in a way that a simply styled car wouldn’t have.

While some critics may complain, they are not the target buyers for this vehicle. Ford is sensibly capitalizing on their assets to create and sell a successful European EV. Based on my brief passenger experience, I believe they deserve a rousing success.

In conclusion, the new Ford Capri EV offers an intriguing combination of controversial design, impressive performance, and promising ride quality. Despite the initial backlash, this larger version of the iconic Capri nameplate has the potential to make a significant impact in the EV market. With its practical yet quality feel, spacious interior, and estimated range of 350 miles, the Capri EV is poised to attract both enthusiasts and everyday drivers looking for a capable and enjoyable electric vehicle.
