The Lamborghini Urus SE: A Plug-In Hybrid SUV with Supercar Speed

Lamborghini has introduced the new Urus SE, a plug-in hybrid version of its popular SUV model. This marks the brand’s second hybrid offering, following the release of the Revuelto. The Urus SE combines a V8 engine with an electric motor, resulting in a total output of 789bhp and supercar-like speeds. This move towards electrification is part of Lamborghini’s broader strategy to transition its entire lineup to electric powertrains.

The Urus SE features a subtle new design that sets it apart from the pure-V8 Urus that has been available since 2018. While both versions will be produced concurrently for a short period, the pure-V8 Urus is no longer available for order. The Urus SE is expected to be priced higher than its predecessor, but Lamborghini has not yet confirmed the exact pricing details.

Under the hood, the Urus SE is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine that produces 612bhp on its own. It is supplemented by an electric motor integrated into the gearbox, providing an additional boost of 132bhp. This power output surpasses that of any other combustion SUV currently on the market in the UK.

The hybrid powertrain includes a 25.9kWh battery located beneath the boot floor, enabling the Urus SE to achieve up to 37 miles of electric-only driving at speeds exceeding 80mph. However, the addition of electrified components increases the vehicle’s weight to 2504kg compared to the standard Urus S, which weighs 2197kg.

Despite the weight increase, Lamborghini’s Chief Technical Officer, Rouven Mohr, reassures that drivers will not notice a significant difference in performance. He explains that Lamborghini worked to compensate for the weight increase by removing the mechanical rear differential and replacing it with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential (e-LSD), resulting in a weight saving of approximately 20kg. Mohr emphasizes that the Urus SE remains the lightest car in its hybrid segment.

In terms of handling, Mohr claims that the Urus SE can achieve the same lap times as the hardcore Urus Performante when equipped with the same tires. This is made possible by the vehicle’s new torque distribution system, which can continuously vary power between the axles. Additionally, the e-LSD manages torque distribution across the rear axle, allowing the car to send 100% of its reserves to the rear wheels when necessary.

On the exterior, the Urus SE receives subtle styling updates inspired by the Revuelto. The front end features a new look, while the boot lid and lighting elements have also been redesigned. The vehicle’s cooling system has been improved, resulting in a claimed 30% enhancement in brake cooling performance.

Inside the cabin, the Urus SE features a larger central infotainment touchscreen, measuring 12.3 inches compared to the previous 10.1-inch display. Lamborghini has focused on enhancing the user experience by revamping menus and improving graphics. However, Mohr emphasizes that Lamborghini’s approach to car interiors is not solely focused on digitalization. The brand aims to strike a balance between voice control, touch-sensitive controls, and physical buttons and switches. The Urus SE’s cabin reflects this philosophy, incorporating physical switches inspired by jet fighters.
