The language of Roulette: Understanding the terminology

The iconic casino game Roulette has been spun for decades and with a distinctive layout and betting system, it’s become a firm favourite.

Players enjoy spinning the wheel with various betting options, allowing them to bet within their bankroll.

With this, there are a variety of terms to know when playing, so you can have a smooth-running time playing one of the best casino games around.

Carry on reading to find out some of these important key terms…

Inside and outside bets

Stepping up to the Roulette wheel, whether it’s at a land-based venue or online, is the first step in any casino game, but there are two main betting categories that you should be aware of in Roulette.

Inside bets are placed on numbers within the numbered grid of the Roulette layout, which have a lower succession rate, but higher rewards. This is just the overall category, but it includes a variety of betting options, like straight bets on individual numbers.

Outside bets are placed outside the numbered grid, including bigger groups of numbers, which equals a better chance of success due to options being less specific. Again, it’s just the overarching category, but it includes specific bets, like red or black numbers.

En Prison and La Partage

Due to various Roulette variations, there may be rules specific to certain games, which is especially the case for European Roulette.

The “En Prison” rule is mainly found in European Roulette and it comes into action when the Roulette ball lands on the green zero. So, the player’s even money bet stays on the table for the next spin and if the next spin results in success, the player gets their original credits back.

The “La Partage” rule is similar to the “En Prison” rule, but instead returns half of the even-money bet to a player if the ball lands on zero, which reduces the house edge on these bets.

House edge and Return to Player (RTP)

Keywords regarding Roulette aren’t solely about the game, but also the statistical parts of it, which include both the house edge and the RTP percentage.

The house edge is the casino’s advantage over players and differs based on the Roulette variant. European Roulette has a lower house edge (approximately 2.70%), whilst American Roulette is higher (around 5.26%), due to the double zero on the American wheel. There’s a higher chance of success on a wheel with only one zero, which is why the house edge is lower.

RTP is the theoretical percentage of wagered credits that players can likely expect to get back over a specific time period. In European Roulette, the RTP is around 97.30% and American Roulette has a lower RTP, as it has a higher house edge.
