“The New Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance: A Plug-In Hybrid with Unmatched Speed and Power”

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the new plug-in hybrid version of its GT model, which not only boasts impressive acceleration but also positions itself as one of the fastest cars in production. This release comes just ahead of Porsche’s anticipated hybrid version of the iconic 911. The GT 63 S E Performance shares its hybrid powertrain with the recently revealed SL hybrid.

Under the hood, the GT 63 S E Performance combines AMG’s powerful twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine with a 201bhp electric motor on the rear axle, resulting in a combined output of 804bhp and a staggering 1047lb ft of torque. These figures surpass even the likes of the Ferrari 812 Superfast and McLaren 750S. With such power, the GT can go from 0-62mph in just 2.8 seconds, making it the fastest-accelerating combustion car produced by AMG to date. It falls just short of the Porsche 911 Turbo S, Ferrari SF90 Stradale, and Lamborghini Revuelto in terms of acceleration.

In addition to its impressive performance, the GT 63 S E Performance offers an electric range of about eight miles from its 6.1kWh battery. The battery can be charged on the move through regenerative braking or using a domestic charger at a rate of 3.7kW. When starting up in Comfort mode, the car runs silently on electric power, but a distinctive AMG start-up sound is played through the stereo speakers to provide an auditory thrill.

The design of the GT 63 S E Performance closely resembles the standard GT model, with a few subtle bespoke touches such as red badging, aero-optimized wheels, and a charge port in the rear bumper. Other notable features include standard carbon-ceramic brake discs, rear-wheel steering, and AMG’s active ride control system.

Orders for the GT 63 S E Performance will open in the autumn, and while UK pricing has not been confirmed, it is expected to start at around £200,000, representing a premium of approximately £25,000 over the top-tier pure-V8 variant.

Overall, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance showcases the brand’s commitment to combining performance and electrification. With its impressive powertrain and acceleration, it sets a new standard for plug-in hybrid sports cars. As the automotive industry continues to prioritize sustainability and emissions reduction, models like the GT 63 S E Performance demonstrate that electrification doesn’t mean sacrificing performance.
