The New Mini Cooper SE: A Quicker, Longer-Range Electric Mini with a Slightly Different Character

The latest generation of the Mini Cooper represents a departure from previous models in several ways. Firstly, Mini has simplified its naming convention, with the new model simply being called the Mini Cooper. Secondly, the new Mini Cooper is now electric-only, with the combustion engine version being an updated version of the previous generation. And thirdly, the all-electric Mini Cooper has a more mature and premium feel compared to its predecessors.

In terms of technical specifications, the Mini Cooper SE Classic comes with a hybrid synchronous electric motor and a nickel-manganese-cobalt drive battery. It has a front-wheel drive layout and a battery size of 54.2/49.2kWh (total/usable). The claimed 0-62mph time is unspecified, and the car has a WLTP Combined range of 244 miles. The Max. charge rate is 11/95kW (AC/DC).

Design-wise, the new Mini Cooper has undergone some changes to achieve a cleaner and more upmarket look. The car’s brightwork and trademark design details have been reduced, resulting in a sleeker appearance. However, some may find that the new design lacks the distinctiveness and charm of previous Mini models.

Inside, Mini has made efforts to improve the interior quality and material richness of the Cooper. Recycled polyester textiles are used for the dashboard and door panels, and overall fit-and-finish standards are high. The driving position is raised due to the positioning of the lithium-ion drive battery, which may take some getting used to for Mini enthusiasts. The car features a centrally mounted OLED circular infotainment display, which serves as the primary source of instrumentation and controls.

In terms of performance, the Mini Cooper SE offers plenty of power and responsiveness with its 215bhp electric motor. However, the increased weight of the battery and chassis structure can be felt on the road, affecting the car’s ride and handling. While the Cooper SE still offers zip and incisiveness on winding roads, it lacks the same level of connection and agility as previous Mini models.

In terms of running costs, the Mini Cooper SE offers a real-world range of around 200 miles. The car features peak DC rapid charging at 95kW, which allows for a 10-80% charge in approximately half an hour. Showroom entry prices are competitive, but optional extras and trim packages can significantly increase the overall cost.

Overall, the new Mini Cooper SE offers improved range, technology, sophistication, and premium appeal compared to its predecessor. However, it may not offer the same level of driver reward and uniqueness that Mini enthusiasts have come to expect. Despite this, it remains a solid choice among compact electric cars, especially for those who value brand heritage and driving enjoyment.
