The Renault Symbioz: A Practical and Efficient Hybrid SUV
The Renault Symbioz is the latest addition to the brand’s SUV lineup and is designed to prioritize practicality, taking inspiration from iconic Renault models of the past. Unlike Renault’s electric cars, which evoke emotion and excitement, the Symbioz aims to be a rational and logical choice for families.
Paula Fabregat, Renault’s small car design chief, explains that the goal was to create “a very good answer for a lot of families.” This focus on practicality influenced the boxy shape of the Symbioz, although Fabregat adds that it is still a “sexy box.”
While the Symbioz was primarily designed as a family car, Renault also plans to target fleet buyers due to its efficient hybrid powertrain. In fact, the business market is expected to account for 40% of UK sales. The Symbioz shares the same platform as the Renault Captur but fills a different market gap.
In terms of dimensions, the Symbioz is slightly larger than the Captur and comparable to the electric Scenic. The front design of the Symbioz closely resembles that of the Captur, reflecting Renault’s signature diagonal logo shape. However, the designers had more freedom with the rest of the car, creating flowing side panels and a unique rear end with sculpted lights featuring a 3D ‘ice cube’ effect.
Inside, the Symbioz features the same dashboard as the Captur, including a portrait-oriented 10.4-inch touchscreen with Renault’s Google-based OpenR Link infotainment system. The rear seats are adjustable and can slide 160mm backwards, providing ample knee room or expanding the already generous boot capacity.
The range-topping Iconic Esprit Alpine model in the UK will come with a Solarbay sunroof, which uses automatically tinting electrochromic glass. This feature is currently exclusive to the electric Scenic.
In terms of technology, the Symbioz will be equipped with 29 driver assistance systems, including rear automatic emergency braking and a safety coach. The hybrid powertrain in the Symbioz is Renault’s E-Tech Full Hybrid 145 system, which combines a 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, a multimodal automatic gearbox, two electric motors, and a 1.2kWh battery. It offers up to 145bhp and achieves an impressive fuel economy of 61.4mpg. Renault claims that the car can run on electric power for around 80% of the time in city driving.
The Symbioz will be available for sale later this year, with pricing and full specifications yet to be finalized. However, entry-level models are expected to start at just under £30,000.
