The second-generation Vauxhall Grandland is set to make a big impact in the SUV market. As Vauxhall’s first model to utilize Stellantis’s flexible STLA Medium platform, the new Grandland offers a range of improvements over its predecessor. One of the most significant updates is the addition of an electric version, marking Vauxhall’s commitment to the electrification of its lineup. The base price for the entry-level hybrid model is £34,700, which is around £2600 more than the previous version with the same powertrain.

The hybrid model combines a three-cylinder petrol engine with a 28bhp 48V motor and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. On the other hand, the electric version, which boasts a 73kWh battery and a range of up to 325 miles, starts at £40,995. When comparing the two powertrain options on a PCP deal, they are relatively similar in terms of deposit and monthly payments. However, the EV has a longer five-year term compared to the ICE car’s four-year term, which accounts for the price difference. It’s worth noting that next year, the Grandland Electric will be available with a larger 98kWh pack, offering a range of up to 435 miles.

The Grandland is available in three trim levels: Design, GS, and Ultimate. Standard equipment includes a pair of screens, smartphone mirroring, a split-folding rear bench, and LED lights. Higher trims add advanced driver-assistance features, bespoke styling cues, and a larger 16-inch infotainment touchscreen. The design of the Grandland takes inspiration from the Experimental concept, with a focus on aerodynamic optimization to maximize the EV’s range. Head designer Mark Adams highlights the importance of projecting sleek and modern lines, even for ICE powertrains, without being overly decorated.

With its larger dimensions, the Grandland offers more space for both passengers and cargo. Rear passengers can enjoy an additional 20mm of legroom compared to the previous model. Despite the increase in size, Vauxhall aimed to strike a balance by ensuring the car remains maneuverable and suitable for normal parking conditions. Adams emphasizes simplicity in design, focusing on technology and quality materials rather than excessive chrome and vents.

The Grandland features several notable design elements. The headlights incorporate 25,600 LEDs each, while the Vauxhall Vizor visage includes an illuminated griffin logo for the first time. At the rear, the Vauxhall brand name is spelled out and illuminated as part of the light bar, with the “Grandland” name embossed at the bottom of the boot lid instead of written in chrome. Buyers can choose from 19-inch and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Inside the Grandland, Vauxhall has made some changes to the digital interface. The Pure Panel digital interface has been replaced with a slimmer 10-inch driver’s display and a separate 16-inch infotainment touchscreen. The infotainment system can receive over-the-air software updates and features ChatGPT artificial intelligence. Physical buttons are retained for the radio and air-conditioning controls, including those on the steering wheel. The center console includes a wireless charging pad with a semi-transparent casing that lights up according to the phone’s charging status.

The Grandland represents Vauxhall’s commitment to embracing an electric-first approach. The addition of an electric version, along with its larger dimensions, puts Vauxhall in direct competition with popular SUVs like the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan X-Trail. Vauxhall’s design philosophy focuses on modernity, simplicity, and a progressive approach rather than relying heavily on heritage design. The brand aims to offer a familiar yet easy and engaging experience for its customers.
