“The New Volkswagen Transporter: A Versatile Lineup of Powertrains and Bodystyles”

Volkswagen Unveils New Transporter with Broad Range of Powertrains and Bodystyles

Volkswagen has recently revealed its latest offering, the new Transporter, which boasts the widest selection of powertrains and bodystyles among all the vans produced by the company so far. Built on the same platform as the new Ford Transit Custom, the Transporter is available with various options, including three diesel engines, a petrol plug-in hybrid, and three battery-electric powertrains.

The diesel options for the Transporter comprise 2.0-liter turbo engines, delivering power outputs of 109bhp, 148bhp, and 168bhp to the front wheels. The 148bhp and 168bhp versions can also be equipped with four-wheel drive. The top-of-the-line model comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

For those looking for a more eco-friendly option, the plug-in hybrid version combines a 2.5-liter petrol engine, a single electric motor, and a 16.5kWh lithium-ion battery. This configuration offers a combined power output of 229bhp, which is sent to the front wheels. Although the electric-only range for the PHEV Transporter has not been officially announced, the similar setup in the Transit Custom provides 23 miles on the motorway and 35 miles in urban areas.

The electric powertrains available for the Transporter all feature a single motor mounted on the rear axle, with power outputs ranging from 134bhp to 282bhp. These models are equipped with a 64kWh battery, which provides a range of up to 209 miles in the Transit. The batteries can be charged at rates of up to 125kW.

In terms of body styles, the Transporter will be offered as a traditional panel van with three or five seats, a double-cab van with six seats, and a nine-seat minibus. Notably, Volkswagen has decided not to offer a California camper variant this time. Instead, the company has chosen to use the passenger-focused Multivan as the basis for its next-generation camper van.

The new Transporter comes in various body lengths, ranging from 5.05m to 5.45m, with maximum load volumes spanning from 5.8 cubic meters to 9.0 cubic meters. It also boasts impressive payload capabilities, with the ability to carry up to 1330kg and tow a trailer weighing up to 2800kg.

Inside the Transporter, drivers will find a 12-inch digital instrument panel and a 13-inch infotainment touchscreen, similar to those found in the Transit Custom. Standard features include USB-A and USB-C ports, while an optional 230V outlet capable of delivering up to 2.3kW is also available.

Although the UK specifications and pricing for the new Transporter have not yet been announced, it is expected to be in line with the new Transit Custom, which starts at £32,350 (excluding VAT). The PHEV Transit Custom starts at £39,984, and the e-Transit Custom is priced from £44,680.

With the introduction of the new Transporter, Volkswagen aims to provide customers with a wide range of options to suit their specific needs and preferences. Whether it’s a diesel engine, a plug-in hybrid, or a fully electric powertrain, the Transporter offers versatility and efficiency. Additionally, the various bodystyles ensure that customers can find the right configuration to meet their requirements, whether it’s for commercial use or recreational purposes. With its advanced technology and stylish design, the new Transporter is set to make a significant impact in the van market.
