Audi’s best-selling model, the Q5, has been given a major update as the brand shifts its focus towards electric cars. The third-generation Q5 will no longer be offered with a pure combustion engine, instead featuring a range of mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids. The initial launch range includes a 2.0-litre turbo petrol four and a diesel option, both with four-wheel drive available. The range-topping SQ5 now boasts a mild-hybrid 3.0-litre turbo petrol V6. Audi has invested in hybrid powertrains due to the longer-than-expected transition to electric cars. The new Q5 is built on Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), which offers improved flexibility for hybrid configurations and future upgrades. The platform also enhances ride comfort and handling. Inside, the Q5 features Audi’s new ‘Digital Stage’ setup with a digital instrument display and infotainment touchscreen. Pricing for the new Q5 has yet to be announced, but it is expected to arrive in showrooms in March 2025.
In addition to the regular Q5, Audi is also set to release a coupé-roofed Sportback version of the SUV. Prototypes of the Sportback with plug-in hybrid powertrains have been spotted testing in Germany. The new engine and body options are expected to arrive simultaneously, offering slightly better fuel economy and an improved electric-only range. However, these enhancements may come at the cost of reduced boot space and a slight increase in price.
The shift towards hybrid and electric vehicles is part of Audi’s overall strategy to phase out internal combustion engines (ICE) in the next eight years. While the transition is taking longer than initially anticipated, Audi remains committed to offering a hybrid option in each segment until the complete electrification of its lineup. Inside, the Q5 features a modern interior with Audi’s new ‘Digital Stage’ setup. This includes an 11.9-inch digital instrument display and a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen. An optional 10.9-inch touchscreen for the front passenger is also available.
