The Polestar 3: A Game-Changing SUV from Polestar

Polestar, the niche carmaker known for its high-performance electric vehicles (EVs), has recently expanded its lineup with the introduction of the Polestar 3. This new SUV, unveiled in 2022, marks a significant step for Polestar as it ventures into the lucrative SUV segment and aims to establish itself as a distinct brand separate from its parent company, Volvo.

The Polestar 3 shares its modular platform with the Volvo XC90, but the two SUVs have distinct designs and driving characteristics. The Polestar 3 features a sportier appearance with a lower roofline and a more swept-back silhouette compared to the boxier and taller XC90. While maintaining some ties to Volvo, Polestar aims to differentiate itself by offering unique design elements and proprietary software.

One aspect that sets the Polestar 3 apart is its emphasis on technology. The vehicle proudly showcases its numerous sensors on the front panel, highlighting its advanced driver assistance systems. This design element is a nod to Polestar’s heritage, which introduced a labeling system with the Polestar 1 model, explaining the purpose of various components.

Inside the Polestar 3, there is a blend of Volvo-like features and bespoke Polestar elements. The digital instrument cluster, steering wheel, and overall layout resemble those found in the XC90, but Polestar has developed its own user interface with proprietary fonts and icons. The infotainment system, based on Android, is similar to that of the Polestar 4 but with a portrait-oriented touchscreen.

Passenger comfort is prioritized in the Polestar 3, with rear-seat passengers enjoying ample legroom thanks to the absence of a third row. However, this configuration sacrifices some storage capacity compared to rivals in the segment. The Polestar 3 offers 21.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 49.8 cubic feet when folded flat.

When it comes to performance, the Polestar 3 impresses with its electric powertrain. The Long-Range Dual-Motor variant features two electric motors powered by a 111-kilowatt-hour battery. With 489 horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque, the Polestar 3 delivers exhilarating acceleration, reaching 0-60 mph in just 4.8 seconds. An optional Performance Package further enhances these figures to 517 hp and 671 lb-ft.

What sets the Polestar 3 apart from other electric vehicles with similar power output is its rear axle. Polestar has added a dual-clutch torque-vectoring differential, enhancing the SUV’s handling capabilities and making it more engaging to drive. The 3’s low center of gravity, 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, and adjustable steering and suspension settings contribute to its dynamic performance.

In terms of range and charging capabilities, the Polestar 3 offers an estimated 315 miles of range on a single charge, though this drops slightly with the Performance Pack option. The vehicle’s 400-volt electrical system supports 250-kilowatt charging, enabling a 10%-80% charge in 30 minutes. Polestar is also working on faster-charging technology to further reduce charging times.

With its combination of distinctive design, advanced technology, and engaging driving dynamics, the Polestar 3 aims to establish itself as a formidable player in the EV market. While sharing some similarities with Volvo, it differentiates itself by offering unique features and a sportier character, giving buyers the reassurance of Volvo’s safety record while presenting a fresh and exciting alternative.
