The Volkswagen ID Buzz: A Modern and Versatile Electric Family Car | Autocar

The Volkswagen ID Buzz is an electric family car that aims to tempt families with active lifestyles to switch to electric vehicles. Unlike other VW ID cars, the Buzz is a VW-only model and has a design inspired by the iconic Type 2 ‘Bus’ of 1949. The Buzz comes in different variants, including a long-wheelbase model and a cargo commercial version.

The long-wheelbase ID Buzz offers more passenger space with seven seats in a 2/3/2 configuration. The third row of seats can be removed to create a 1340-litre cargo space. The cargo commercial version features a 2+1-seat cab and is designed for practicality rather than luxury.

Volkswagen offers the ID Buzz in two specification levels, Life and Style. The Life models come with features such as ambient lighting, wireless Apple CarPlay, and heated front seats. The Style models have additional features like an electric tailgate and 20-inch alloy wheels.

The Buzz is powered by different batteries and motors, with the long-wheelbase model introducing a new 79kWh battery and a more powerful 282bhp motor. The top-of-the-range ID Buzz GTX has 335bhp and all-wheel drive.

In terms of design, the ID Buzz pays homage to its predecessor, the Type 2, with references to its ancestor executed neatly. However, it is larger in size and has a more modern look. The interior of the Buzz offers spaciousness and comfort, with synthetic leather and recycled materials used for a more sustainable approach. The infotainment system, although improved, still has some usability issues.

When it comes to performance, the ID Buzz offers good everyday performance and acceleration. The long-wheelbase model with the more powerful motor provides even better performance. However, customization options for coasting and battery regeneration are limited.

In terms of ride and handling, the ID Buzz performs well in urban environments, providing maneuverability and stability. It handles like a van due to its size and weight, but it maintains respectable body control. The Buzz offers a comfortable and refined ride, with low cabin noise and good isolation.

The ID Buzz has a high price tag, starting at just under £60,000. It is not a direct competitor to van-based MPVs in terms of price, but it offers unique design appeal, versatility, and superior range. The short-wheelbase model offers a usable battery range of under 200 miles, while the long-wheelbase model with the larger battery offers a claimed range of up to 286 miles.

Overall, the Volkswagen ID Buzz is a unique and versatile electric family car that combines modern design with practicality. It offers a comfortable and refined ride, although it comes with a high price tag. The long-wheelbase model is the most desirable option, providing excellent everyday performance and range.
