Toyota Recalls Tundra and Lexus LX Models for Engine Issue and Announces Replacement Plan

Toyota has announced a recall of approximately 102,000 units of the Tundra and the Lexus LX, built during the 2022 and 2023 model years, due to an engine-related problem. The company initially stated that it did not have a fix for the issue. However, it has now confirmed that it will replace the engine in the affected vehicles. This decision comes after the recall was assigned number 24V-381 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It’s important to note that the recall only applies to the non-electrified versions of the Tundra, equipped with a twin-turbocharged, 3.4-liter V6 engine that offers 348 or 379 horsepower, depending on the trim level. The optional hybrid system found in the Tundra is not included in the recall at this time. Similarly, the Lexus LX, which is only available with the six-cylinder engine, is also part of the recall.

The Japanese automaker has identified the cause of the issue as certain machining debris that may not have been cleared from the engine during production. This debris can lead to the failure of the main bearings, resulting in various serious problems such as engine knocking, rough running, failure to start, or even engine failure while driving. The latter symptom increases the risk of accidents. However, no accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with this issue.

Interestingly, several Tundra owners have already lodged complaints with the NHTSA, describing problems similar to the one identified by Toyota. Some owners reported hearing pulsing or mechanical noises from the engine before it shut off, while others experienced engine cutoffs that could not be resolved. Many of these reports also mentioned the “check engine” light coming on before the engine stopped. On the other hand, no engine problems have been reported for the Lexus LX.

To address the issue, Toyota plans to replace the engines in the affected vehicles. The company aims to inform affected customers by mail before the end of July 2024. For Tundra owners, the recall includes vehicles produced between November 2, 2021, and February 13, 2023. Meanwhile, if you own a Lexus LX, your vehicle is part of the recall if it was manufactured from July 30, 2021, to November 25, 2022.

This proactive approach by Toyota emphasizes the company’s commitment to prioritizing customer safety. By promptly addressing the engine-related problem and providing a fix for affected vehicles, Toyota aims to ensure the continued satisfaction and peace of mind of its customers.
