Toyota Unveils Turbocharged GR86 Rally Concept for 2024 SEMA Show

Toyota is shaking things up with its turbocharged GR86 project. Unlike Subaru’s approach of pairing forced induction with a flat-four engine, Toyota is taking a different route by transforming the coupe into a rally-inspired concept. Set to be unveiled at the 2024 SEMA Show, the GR86 will feature the turbo-three engine from the Corolla GR.

Photographer Larry Chen has provided an exclusive sneak peek into the build process, showcasing the expertise of California-based shop Evasive Motorsports. Known for its extensive range of aftermarket parts for the GR86, including turbo and supercharger kits, Evasive Motorsports is tackling the bulk of the modifications for this one-off concept.

Although Toyota has not released official specifics on the project, it seems that most of the parts will be sourced from Toyota’s own inventory. However, making the swap work is no easy feat. The GR Corolla utilizes a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, transverse mounting, a six-speed manual transmission, and all-wheel drive. On the other hand, the GR86 features a 2.4-liter naturally-aspirated flat-four engine, longitudinal mounting, a different six-speed manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive. This necessitates significant fabrication work to bring everything together.

What makes this project truly exciting is its tribute to Toyota’s rally heritage. The design of the concept aims to pay homage to iconic rally cars like the Celica GT-Four that dominated the World Rally Championship in the 1990s. With a period-correct livery and potentially a slightly raised ride height, reminiscent of rally cars, this GR86 will undoubtedly turn heads.

While we await further details about the build, we can expect Toyota to unveil the concept in the lead-up to the SEMA Show, scheduled to take place from November 5th in Las Vegas. As for whether the GR Corolla will receive the GR86’s flat-four in return, that remains to be seen.

Overall, Toyota’s decision to create a turbocharged GR86 with rally-inspired modifications demonstrates a commitment to pushing boundaries and delivering an exhilarating driving experience. By combining their acclaimed engineering prowess with a nod to their rallying heritage, Toyota is sure to capture the imaginations of enthusiasts around the world.
