“Uncompromised Off-Roading: The New Electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class Outperforms its Combustion Counterpart”

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its new electric G-Class, known as the G580 with EQ Technology. The electric version of the iconic off-roader is said to offer uncompromised off-road ability and even outperform its combustion-engined counterpart. The G580 features four electric motors, one for each wheel, producing a combined output of 579bhp and 859lb ft of torque. It also boasts a drag coefficient of 0.44, improved aerodynamics, and a range of 292 miles on a single charge. Although slightly heavier than the G450d, the G580 showcases impressive off-road capabilities, including a shiftable low-range transmission and a fording depth of 850mm.

One of the standout features of the G580 is its unique off-road functions. It offers a G-Turn function that allows it to rotate 720 degrees on the spot, a G-Steering function that reduces the turning circle, and an off-road crawler function that can run as low as 1.2mph. Additionally, it features a “transparent bonnet” function that uses front-facing cameras to project a forward view onto the infotainment screen, making it easier to tackle obstacles.

The G580’s battery pack is integrated into the frame and serves as a structural component, eliminating the need for separate cross braces. It has a fast-charging capability of up to 200kW and can complete the ascent and descent of the challenging Schöckl mountain pass in Austria 14 times on a single charge.

Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new naming strategy for its electric vehicles, with the G580 being the first to adopt it. Instead of using the EQ sub-brand, the new electric vehicles will carry the classic model names, followed by the “EQ Technology” suffix to indicate their electric credentials.

While UK pricing and on-sale dates for the G580 with EQ Technology have yet to be revealed, it is expected to sit between the G450d and the range-topping Mercedes-AMG G63. The G580 represents Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to offering electrified options across its lineup, without compromising on performance or off-road capability.
