Unity Appoints Former Zynga COO Matthew Bromberg as New CEO

Unity, the game engine maker, has announced the appointment of Matthew Bromberg as its new CEO, president, and board member. Bromberg will officially join Unity on May 15, filling a position that has been temporarily occupied by Jim Whitehurst, former Red Hat CEO. Whitehurst will assume the role of executive chair of the Unity board, while Roelof Botha will transition from chairman to lead independent board member.

Bromberg’s appointment comes after the departure of John Riccitiello, who resigned last fall following a pricing controversy that upset game developers. Unity later reversed parts of the price increase, calming the developers. This is a critical time for Unity as it prepares to release Unity 6, its latest game engine version, which will compete with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.4.

Unity’s board and leadership team expressed their confidence in Bromberg’s ability to lead the company forward. Botha stated, “Matt’s proven leadership, customer-first mindset, and deep understanding of the dynamic gaming industry make him the right executive to lead Unity forward.” He also praised Whitehurst for his contributions in leading Unity through necessary changes and positioning the company for long-term success.

Whitehurst, in turn, expressed his honor in serving as Unity’s interim CEO and his excitement to work closely with Bromberg to support the company’s commitment to creator success and innovation. After stepping down as CEO, Whitehurst will return to Silver Lake, one of Unity’s largest shareholders, where he will join as a managing director leading operating and investment team initiatives.

Bromberg brings over 20 years of experience in the gaming industry to his new role. He previously served as COO of Zynga, where he played a crucial role in the company’s turnaround. He oversaw Zynga’s game studios globally and was responsible for product development, design, technology, data, and analytics. Bromberg also held leadership positions at Electronic Arts, where he contributed to scaling the company’s mobile division and led teams across continents in creating popular games.

In his statement, Bromberg expressed his excitement in joining Unity and his commitment to providing the best integrated platform for creators to bring great games and experiences to global audiences. He also aims to accelerate the company’s revenue growth and profitability.

Aside from his new role at Unity, Bromberg is currently a senior advisor to Blackstone and serves on the board of directors of Bumble, Monzo, and Blast. He previously served on the board of directors of Fitbit from 2018 to 2021.

Unity will release its first quarter 2024 financial results on May 9, 2024. With Bromberg’s extensive experience and leadership, Unity is poised for continued growth in the gaming industry.
