Unleashing the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV: Dancing Through Moab’s Off-Road Terrain

GMC recently unveiled its 2024 Hummer EV SUV, a smaller version of its megafauna pickup truck counterpart. The SUV’s agility and off-road capabilities were put to the test during a media expedition to Moab, Utah, a renowned off-road destination. It became evident that the SUV maintained the same impressive performance as the pickup, with some noticeable enhancements.

When compared to the Hummer SUT, the SUV showcased improved clearance angles. It boasted a 49.6-degree approach angle (only 0.1 better than the SUT), a 49-degree departure angle (10.6 degrees better), and a 2.2-degree improvement in breakover angle. These enhancements, along with the inclusion of four-wheel steering, contributed to a reduced turning circle of 35.4 feet. With these features, the SUV exhibited nimbleness and maneuverability on both on- and off-road terrains.

In terms of camera coverage, the SUV comes with 15 standard cameras, one less than the SUT. However, the SUT has an additional angle that captures the cargo bed, which the SUV lacks.

The 3X trim of the Hummer EV SUV is equipped with three motors that generate a combined 830 horsepower and an impressive 1,200 pound-feet of torque. To enhance its off-road capabilities further, buyers can opt for the $9,995 Extreme Off-Road Package, which includes features like rock sliders with integrated steps, full underbody skid plating, additional underbody cameras, an electronically locking mechanical front differential, virtual rear differential programming, heavy-duty ball spline half shafts, tow hooks, and 18-inch black wheels on Goodyear Wrangler Mud-Terrain tires.

The base price of the Hummer EV SUV is $104,650. When additional features like the $1,495 Infinity Roof, $450 Void Black paint, $150 all-weather rubber mat for the frunk, and $2,295 destination charge are included, the total asking price amounts to $119,080 before taxes and fees. While the price tag may discourage some potential buyers, these high-end off-road vehicles offer capabilities that exceed what most owners will ever utilize.

The Hummer EV SUV delivers remarkable off-road performance with minimal fuss. Its adaptive air suspension, equipped with Sachs ZF dampers, efficiently manages the weight and absorbs impact. However, some found the suspension setup slightly firm, especially on easy to moderate terrains. Lowering tire pressures from the recommended 45 psi to around 31 or 32 psi would provide a more cushioned ride. Despite this minor criticism, the Hummer EV SUV performed exceptionally well in technical sections, navigating rocky stretches and descending rock staircases with ease.

During prototype testing, GMC engineers made adjustments to the suspension based on feedback from Moab excursions. The inclusion of front and rear anti-roll bars initially proved too stiff for the rear, leading engineers to remove the rear anti-roll bar and reprogram the suspension. This modification resulted in improved ride quality and enhanced performance on the trail.

The Hummer EV SUV’s four-wheel steering system was praised for its convenience and maneuverability. It allows drivers to make tight turns effortlessly without executing three-point turns. However, at low speeds off-road, rear steering can be a hindrance when drivers prefer the back of the vehicle to follow the front instead of wagging with minor steering inputs.

Since electric vehicles lack the auditory feedback of internal combustion engines, GMC engineers programmed artificial throttle noise in Off-Road Mode to provide drivers with a sense of the vehicle’s performance. Some drivers felt that the noise could be louder to offer a more immersive experience.

The Hummer’s traction control system and grip from its Goodyear Wrangler tires inspire confidence in traversing steep rock faces. However, it’s important to exercise caution, as excessive wheel spin can result in burning rubber. In such situations, it is advisable to engage the rear locker early to prevent unnecessary damage to the vehicle and the environment.

One drawback noted by testers was the braking action in Terrain Mode’s Low setting. At speeds under 20 miles per hour, the brakes engaged abruptly, mimicking an emergency stop. This feature may be useful in extreme situations where precision control is crucial, but for most off-road adventures, using Drive mode is recommended.

Despite its remarkable off-road capabilities, driving the Hummer EV SUV requires some adjustment. The vehicle’s wide width of 86.5 inches takes getting used to, along with its elevated seating position and the expansive hood that stretches out like The Great Plains. The inclusion of multiple cameras around the vehicle provides a comprehensive view, but video images can distort perspective compared to visual observation. These unique aspects of driving a Hummer require acclimatization.

In conclusion, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV impresses with its off-road capabilities and performance. It proves to be a solid option for those seeking adventure and are willing to invest in a rugged, high-end vehicle. Owning a Hummer EV SUV is akin to taming a mythical beast; it requires understanding and skill to wield its immense power and potential. Although not suitable for everyone due to the price and specific needs it caters to, for those with a taste for adventure and an appropriately-sized budget, the opportunity to make a Hummer SUV dance is well worth it.
