Unlocking the Journey to AI Maturity: Insights from the State of AI at Work Study

blankThe AI Impact Tour on June 5th: A Must-Attend Event for AI Enthusiasts

Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to make waves in the workplace, with new studies being released regularly. One of the most recent studies, conducted by Microsoft and LinkedIn as part of their annual Work Trend Index, reveals that while workers are embracing AI, employers are still hesitant to fully integrate it into their operations. To shed more light on this topic, Asana and Anthropic have collaborated on this year’s State of AI at Work study.

The study, which surveyed over 5,000 knowledge workers and consulted AI experts in the US and UK in March 2024, aims to provide decision-making executives with valuable insights on AI adoption in the workplace. Asana highlights three key findings from the study:

1. The percentage of knowledge workers using AI weekly has increased by 44 percent over the past nine months, reaching 52 percent.

2. Only 7 percent of employees report that their companies have mature AI implementations, characterized by successful integration of multiple AI tools into work processes and regular evaluation of their impact.

3. A staggering 82 percent of workers say their organizations have yet to provide training on the use of generative AI.

While these findings may not be surprising, what sets this study apart is its focus on organizational AI maturity and the actionable insights it provides for organizations to advance their AI implementation. Asana’s head of its Work Innovation Lab, Dr. Rebecca Hinds, explains that the report classifies organizations according to a five-stage AI maturity model, from immature (Stage 1) to mature (Stage 5) implementations. The study also outlines the steps organizations need to take to achieve mature AI implementations, known as the “5Cs”: Comprehension, Concerns, Collaboration, Context, and Calibration.

To dive deeper into this topic, Asana is hosting The AI Audit in NYC on June 5th. This exclusive invite-only event will bring together top executive leaders to explore strategies for auditing AI models and ensuring optimal performance and accuracy across organizations. It’s an incredible opportunity for attendees to learn from industry experts and exchange insights on AI implementation.

The five-stage journey to AI maturity outlined in the study provides a guide for executives to assess where their companies stand in terms of AI implementation:

1. Stage 1: AI Skepticism – Organizations recognize AI’s potential and begin exploring its applications.

2. Stage 2: AI Activation – Companies launch pilot projects and gain hands-on experience with AI.

3. Stage 3: AI Experimentation – Larger AI initiatives are launched, and executives address the challenges of integrating AI system-wide.

4. Stage 4: AI Scaling – AI becomes an integral part of the organization’s operations, reshaping workflows and decision-making processes.

5. Stage 5: AI Maturity – Organizations skillfully leverage AI to drive transformative results, aligning the technology with their organizational goals.

The secret to achieving AI maturity lies in boosting comprehension, prioritizing AI safety and reliability, embracing a human-centered approach, developing comprehensive policies and principles, and measuring AI’s impact and value.

As organizations progress through these stages, they must address five key factors (the “5Cs”):

1. AI Comprehension – Employees’ understanding and usage of AI increases significantly as organizations mature.

2. AI Concerns – Executives must stay in tune with workers’ concerns about AI, from understanding how it works to addressing ethical implications.

3. AI Collaboration – Employees’ perception of AI shifts from viewing it as a tool to seeing it as a teammate that contributes to work processes, decision-making, and problem-solving.

4. AI Context – Clear policies and guidelines governing AI usage are crucial for consistency and innovation within organizations.

5. AI Calibration – Organizations must engage their workforce in evaluating AI’s effectiveness and value to calibrate it effectively.

The collaboration between Asana and Anthropic for this study stems from their shared mission to develop advanced and trusted technology. Anthropic focuses on building safe and ethical AI systems, while Asana is dedicated to helping teams collaborate more effectively and efficiently. Their joint effort aims to provide organizations with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the evolving landscape of AI.

Overall, the State of AI at Work study offers valuable insights for decision-making executives looking to improve their AI strategies and achieve mature AI implementations. Whether you’re a skeptic or already embracing AI, understanding the stages of AI maturity and the factors that contribute to it can help guide your organization towards successful AI integration.
