Smart has unveiled its latest concept car, the Smart #5, which is the brand’s largest and most technologically advanced electric car to date. The #5 is roughly the same size as the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40, but it introduces a new styling direction with a more rugged appearance compared to Smart’s smaller crossovers, the #1 and #3. One of the standout features of the #5 is its segmented LED lights, a departure from the traditional light bars seen on its siblings.
The off-road flavor of the #5 reflects Smart’s new commitment to the growing outdoor lifestyle market in China, where Geely, a part-owner of Smart, is based. Smart CEO Dirk Adelmann stated that the #5 opens up a new segment for customers worldwide. The production version of the #5 is expected to share the SEA platform with other Geely vehicles, including the Polestar 4, Volvo EX30, and Zeekr X.
However, what sets the #5 apart from its counterparts is its use of an 800V electrical architecture, allowing for faster charging speeds. It will also feature a battery with more than 100kWh in capacity, making it one of the largest batteries in its size category. Smart claims a range of over 340 miles between charges and a 10-80% charge in just 15 minutes. In comparison, the #1 has a maximum charging rate of 150kW and a range of up to 273 miles.
The #5 will also come equipped with four-wheel drive, indicating the use of two electric motors, one on each axle. Although no power figures have been released yet, the dual-motor Smart #1 Brabus generates a combined output of 422bhp and 400lb ft of torque.
The production version of the #5 is expected to offer a single-motor variant with a longer range and a lower price point. Inside the #5, a new-look dashboard integrates the digital instrument display and twin infotainment touchscreens into one large oval shape.
The on-board computer of the #5 is powered by AMD’s V2000 processor, providing sufficient power for an advanced artificial intelligence assistant. This assistant will enhance the vehicle’s voice controls for functions like text messaging, climate controls, and sat-nav. The #5 also features a touch-sensitive panel instead of physical buttons for critical features.
The production version of the Smart #5 will be unveiled later this year and is anticipated to arrive in the UK in 2025 with a starting price of around £35,000 for the single-motor variant.
