“Volkswagen Golf R Gets a Mid-Life Refresh with Subtle Updates and More Power”

Volkswagen’s R division has released a mid-life refresh for the Golf R, with subtle updates that enhance its already winning formula. The most notable change is an increase in power, making it the most powerful series production Golf yet, with 328bhp. This boost in power is complemented by tweaks to the driving modes and the option of a Performance Pack that adds lightweight forged alloy wheels and an angrier exhaust. Visually, the Golf R features slimmer headlights, a reprofiled front bumper, and 3D-effect tail-lights with different strobing and flashing ‘welcome signatures’.

The Golf R retains its responsive and powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which delivers satisfying performance and smooth acceleration. The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox shifts quickly and decisively, while the improved drive mode set-up offers greater customisation and even a new Eco mode for a more relaxed driving experience. The Golf R’s chassis remains largely unchanged, offering a mix of entertainment and control. The quick steering and strong front-end grip allow for precise handling and confident cornering.

One of the standout features of the Golf R is its four-wheel drive system, which now offers slightly more rear-drive throttle adjustability in its revised R mode. While it may not match the driver involvement of some competitors like the Mercedes-AMG A35 or the Honda Civic Type R, the Golf R still provides an opportunity for expressive driving.

Despite the minimal updates, the Golf R’s appeal remains undiminished. With the automotive industry transitioning towards decarbonisation, Volkswagen has focused on maintaining the Golf R’s well-rounded performance rather than implementing drastic changes. The refreshed Golf R is poised to continue its success as a high-velocity hatchback that combines power, precision, and practicality.
