Volkswagen has introduced its new flagship electric vehicle, the Volkswagen ID 7, in an effort to prove that it can build a truly great electric car. This comes as the automaker aims to shift away from combustion engines and compete with other electric cars on the market. The ID 7 is positioned to take on rivals like the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE, offering similar size but at a lower cost. The range currently includes the 77kWh Pro Match trim, with the 86kWh Pro S variant on the way. The eventual range-topper will be the GTX version, which promises to be sprightly.

In terms of design, the ID 7 boasts a long saloon body that enhances its aerodynamic efficiency. With a drag coefficient of just 0.23, it is among the most slippery cars available, contributing to its claimed range of 383 miles. The car is built on VW’s MEB platform and features the most efficient evolution of the company’s electric powertrain, called APP550. The rear-wheel-drive model tested here generates 282bhp and 402lb ft of torque, with a four-wheel-drive GTX variant expected to arrive later. The ID 7 also prioritizes comfort and agility, with suspension options that include VW’s revamped DCC dampers and variable-ratio steering.

Inside, the ID 7 offers a light-infused atmosphere similar to the Tesla Model 3, but with a familiarity and warmth that makes it feel more comfortable and less spartan. The car features excellent ergonomics, spacious seating with generous headroom, and optional Ergoactive seats that are plush and comfortable. The touchscreen infotainment system has been improved for better usability, although some controls still frustrate at times. The cabin offers ample boot space of 532 liters, but lacks a separate ‘frunk’ for charging cable storage. Material richness is somewhat lacking, with cheaper plastics detracting from the overall tactile appeal.

On the road, the ID 7 delivers strong performance and effortless acceleration. Its 282bhp and 402lb ft of torque allow it to reach the national speed limit without hesitation, with a mid-range turn of pace that is impressive. The car offers a choice of accelerator response modes, with Comfort mode providing a gradual ramp-up in power and Sport mode offering precise and responsive acceleration. While regenerative braking control is limited, the ID 7 allows for toggling between drive modes to adjust the level of regen. The car’s handling is tidy and easy to control, with good grip and a rear-drive cornering balance.

In terms of comfort and isolation, the ID 7 excels in ride quality and road refinement. With its generous wheelbase and suspension options, the car remains composed and comfortable, even on rougher roads. It offers a good level of agility and steering accuracy, although feedback is limited. The ID 7 provides a relaxing and quiet driving experience, with minimal road noise and excellent visibility.

In terms of efficiency and running costs, the ID 7 offers good overall efficiency in various environments. The Pro S variant promises a claimed range of 435 miles and supports rapid charging rates of 170kW (Pro) and 200kW (Pro S). While the ID 7 is competitively priced compared to rivals like the BMW i5, it is not as cheap as Tesla and BYD. In touring tests, the 77kWh battery version achieved an efficiency of 3.6mpkWh and a cruising range of 277 miles. The ID 7’s charging rate is limited to 175kW for now, but this is expected to improve with future updates.

Overall, the Volkswagen ID 7 represents a well-rounded package in the electric car class. It offers a combination of space, comfort, performance, and efficiency that makes it highly appealing. While it may not have the same subjective appeal as some of its premium competitors, the ID 7 delivers on its promise of being a great electric car.
