Volkswagen ID 7: The Best Electric Car for the Money

Volkswagen has introduced the new Volkswagen ID 7, a five-meter-long executive car that aims to showcase the company’s ability to build a great electric vehicle. While Volkswagen has already released four other electric models, including the ID 3 hatchback and the ID 4 crossover, the ID 7 is positioned as the flagship electric vehicle that can compete with luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz while offering a more affordable price. The ID 7 is available in three variants: the Pro Match, Pro S, and GTX, with prices starting at £51,550.

One of the key features of the ID 7 is its impressive aerodynamic design, with a drag coefficient of just 0.23. This contributes to its claimed range of 383 miles, making it the electric Volkswagen with the longest range currently available. The ID 7 is built on the same modular electric platform (MEB) as other ID models, but it introduces the most efficient evolution of VW’s electric powertrain, called APP550. With a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, the ID 7 Pro generates 282bhp and 402lb ft of torque, while the GTX variant offers all-wheel drive and 335bhp.

In terms of ride and handling, the ID 7 offers a comfortable and composed driving experience. It features steel springs and VW’s revamped DCC dampers, providing 15 levels of response. The ID 7 has a good feeling of agility and corners impressively flatly, with a subtle rear-drive balance. However, some testers noted that the steering can feel less natural compared to other VW models, and the traction control can be less smooth in wet conditions.

Inside the ID 7, the cabin offers a light-infused atmosphere similar to the Tesla Model 3 but with a familiarity and warmth that mitigates any feeling of sparseness. The ergonomics are excellent, with a comfortable driving position and generous headroom. The optional Ergoactive seats are highly praised for their plush upholstery, massage functionality, and comfort. The touchscreen infotainment system has been improved, with user-configurable menus and direct access to frequently used functions.

In terms of efficiency and running costs, the ID 7 delivers good efficiency in a range of environments, with an average efficiency of 3.6mpkWh in touring tests. The Pro S model with the larger battery offers a claimed range of up to 440 miles. The ID 7 also offers competitive charging rates, with the Pro S model allowing for charging speeds up to 200kW. However, the ID 7 is not as cheap as some of its competitors, such as Tesla and BYD.

Overall, the Volkswagen ID 7 is positioned as a well-rounded electric vehicle that offers a great combination of performance, comfort, and practicality. With its impressive range, aerodynamic design, and competitive pricing, the ID 7 is a compelling option for those looking for a luxury electric car.
