Why Did the Volkswagen Up GTI Become a Sales Hit?
The Volkswagen Up GTI took the market by storm when it was released in 2018. Despite its modest specs, with 118bhp, a 0-62mph time of 8.8 seconds, and a top speed of 122mph, it quickly became a sales hit. So what made this lukewarm hatchback so popular?
Enthusiasts have a deep appreciation for cars that prioritize quality of performance over sheer power. The Up GTI’s 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine strikes a balance between low-end grunt and high-revving capability, making it a joy to drive. It behaves like a larger engine, especially in urban areas and on B-roads.
Weighing in at just 995kg, the Up GTI delivers 148lb ft of torque through a six-speed manual gearbox. While the engine performs well at lower speeds, it can feel a bit underpowered on the motorway. However, its impressive fuel economy, officially rated at 58.9mpg, makes up for any deficiencies in power.
In terms of handling, the Up GTI shines. Its stiffened suspension, lowered by 15mm, and wider rear track make it a plucky and dynamic car to drive. While it may not offer the same level of grip and ride composure as larger GTI models or a Mini, it outperforms its direct competitors like the Renault Twingo GT and Suzuki Swift Sport.
The Up GTI’s design, both inside and out, is another factor that contributes to its appeal. With its attractive one-piece Jacara tartan seats, red ambient lighting, and 5.0-inch color TFT display, it offers a stylish and well-resolved interior. In terms of running costs, the Up GTI is a frugal hot hatch, averaging over 40mpg. It also holds its value well, making it an excellent used buy, with prices starting at around £8000.
Overall, the Volkswagen Up GTI’s combination of performance, economy, handling, and design makes it a compelling choice in the small hot hatch segment. While it may not offer the same level of refinement and roundedness as larger GTI models, it delivers an enjoyable and fun driving experience at an affordable price point.
