Volvo’s £96,255 EX90 flagship may be delivered to customers without certain key features, such as smart charging, Apple CarPlay, and some safety functions. The Swedish car maker has confirmed that any missing features will be added later via an update, although no specific date has been provided. This news comes as a setback for the brand, as it had recently refunded some EX30 owners due to issues with screens going black and steering-wheel buttons not responding.

The US-built EX90 is set to arrive in the UK in October, but it may not come equipped with two advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that detect hazards at junctions and automatically apply the brakes. Additionally, certain lidar features, like nighttime use, are not expected to be available in the initial models. The car’s automatic ability to slow down for corners when using cruise control will also be missing.

In terms of infotainment, the EX90 will not have Apple CarPlay or the option for a light theme. Some premium features, such as smart charging, bi-directional charging, and plug and charge (which automatically pays for public charging through an account linked to the car), will also be absent upon launch.

Furthermore, Volvo has acknowledged that the car could drain up to 3% of its battery per day while parked for up to 72 hours. However, the future update will address this issue by optimizing the core system’s background operations.

In response to these concerns, a Volvo spokesperson emphasized that the EX90 is designed to improve over time through updates and upgrades. They reassured customers that their satisfaction and product quality are top priorities for Volvo as they begin deliveries of their new fully electric flagship SUV.

Volvo CEO Jim Rowan also downplayed the delays, highlighting the advantages of owning a software-defined vehicle with over-the-air update capabilities.
