What We Know About Japan’s First Legal Land Casino So Far

Japan stands as one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, captivating visitors of all ages with its unique blend of attractions. From deep anime culture to renowned powder snow for skiing, and from diverse local cuisines to beautiful festivals, the Land of the Rising Sun continues to draw travelers from around the globe.

However, despite its charm in various aspects, Japan has historically lagged in catering to the interests of gambling enthusiasts. While destinations like Macau and Singapore have been centers for casino gaming in Asia, Japan’s gambling aficionados have resorted primarily to an online casino to satisfy their gaming needs.

But here’s the good news! Japan is planning to welcome its first legal land-based casino, slated for a grand opening in the fall of 2030. This landmark development heralds a new era of luxury gaming experiences for visitors from around the world. In this article, we’ll delve into what we know so far with some key details on Japan’s first legal land-based casinos.

Scheduled Opening in Fall 2030

Anchored by the “IR Promotion Act” enacted in 2016, this Integrated Resort (IR) promises a comprehensive entertainment experience beyond the casino floor. Envisioned as a multifaceted complex, the IR will encompass an international conference center, luxury hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and more. Initially scheduled for a late 2020s debut, the opening date has been revised to fall 2030, with construction already underway.

Located in an Artificial Island Yumeshima, Osaka

Following the selection process which rivals like Yokohama, Nagasaki, and Wakayama once joined, Osaka, Japan’s second-largest city located in western Japan, emerged as the chosen locale for the IR in April 2023.

Renowned for its distinct cultural identity and street food culture Osaka boasts easy access to neighboring tourist hotspots like Kyoto and Kobe, and is poised to welcome visitors from near and far with conveniently situated Kansai International Airport. On Yumeshima, an artificial island within Osaka Port, the IR will complement the city’s vibrant landscape and serve as a focal point for tourism. Also, the island is to become the site of the 2025 World Expo. In 2024, the Osaka Metro Chuo Line is scheduled to reach the island.

Operated by MGM & ORIX

Spearheaded by a consortium comprising MGM Resorts International and ORIX Corporation, an Osaka-native financial services conglomerate, the IR will blend global expertise with native insight to deliver an unparalleled guest experience. MGM’s track record in managing world-class IRs, coupled with ORIX’s deep-rooted presence in Osaka, ensures a seamless fusion of international standards and local hospitality.

Casino Area To Take Up To 3% Of the Facilities

As mentioned earlier, this IR is a location that has various facilities such as an international conference center, exhibition hall, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls in addition to casinos. Spanning approximately 490,000 square meters, the IR will offer a diverse array of amenities such as an international conference center, exhibition hall, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls in addition to casinos. With the casino facility to take a floor size of approximately 65,000 square meters in total, the actual casino area can take up to just 3% of the total floor space.

Emphasizing a holistic approach to entertainment, visitors can indulge in culinary delights, world-class entertainment, shopping extravaganzas, and more, ensuring an enriching experience for all.

In summary, Japan’s forthcoming legal land-based casino represents a significant milestone in the country’s tourism landscape. The IR promises to redefine luxury gaming while showcasing Japan’s rich cultural tapestry. As the countdown to its unveiling continues, travelers worldwide can eagerly plan a thrilling journey to the Land of the Rising Sun.
