Why I, an Old-School Car Enthusiast, Fell in Love with the Tesla Cybertruck

**Driving the Tesla Cybertruck: An Analog Guy’s Perspective**

**The Journey Begins: An Unexpected Purchase**

In a world dominated by digital technologies, I never thought I would find myself behind the wheel of a Tesla Cybertruck. As an old-school car enthusiast, I am more accustomed to the carbureted engines and classic designs of vintage vehicles. In my garage, you’ll find a collection that includes a 1969 Mustang, a 1967 F-100, a 1977 F-250, a 1966 F-100 undergoing restoration, and a 2003 Corvette coupe. However, my family recently surprised me with the purchase of a Cybertruck, much to my initial disbelief.

**Order and Delivery Process: A Communication Challenge**

The journey with Tesla began in December when my wife excitedly informed me that we were purchasing the Cybertruck. Through my son, who already owned a Model Y and was a devoted Tesla fan, we secured an invitation to buy the limited-run Foundation Series Cybertruck. Despite the excitement, the lack of effective communication with Tesla during the order and delivery process proved to be a major frustration. The information provided was often incorrect, inconsistent, or non-existent. We had no clear idea of the truck’s status or an approximate delivery timetable. This lack of transparency is surprising given Tesla’s reputation for technological advancement. It pales in comparison to the detailed tracking information we receive for even mundane deliveries like pizza.

Upon receiving the Cybertruck on May 1, we were pleasantly surprised to find it clean, unlike some others we had seen fresh off transporters covered in dirt. However, there were minor issues with fit and finish, such as burrs on the stainless steel panels and a small scratch on the quarter panel. These will hopefully be resolved during a service appointment.

**Driving Experience: The Learning Curve and Unique Features**

For someone who had never driven an electric vehicle before, getting behind the wheel of the Cybertruck was a steep learning curve. Basic tasks such as starting, shifting, and turning off the vehicle required adjustments in my muscle memory. The touchscreen interface, which controls various functions such as climate settings and performance adjustments, took some time to get used to. Even as someone who is not technologically ignorant, I continue to discover new features and functionalities with each drive.

Visibility in the Cybertruck is satisfactory at best. The rear-view mirror becomes useless when the tonneau cover is extended over the bed, and the thick A-pillar obstructs the view, particularly on the left side. It requires extra caution and double-checking when maneuvering in blind spots. However, the driving experience itself is impressive. The acceleration, even in “chill mode,” is remarkable, and in “sport mode,” it is simply exhilarating. The ride quality in “chill mode” is smooth and comfortable, minimizing bumps and vibrations. The supportive seats and excellent suspension make even long drives enjoyable.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the driving experience is the unique steering system. The variable-ratio, steer-by-wire system offers incredibly responsive handling. Initially, it felt like I was wrestling with the vehicle during turns, but with time, I became more confident, feeling like a skilled IndyCar driver navigating corners effortlessly.

**The Bold Design: Love It or Hate It**

When the Cybertruck was unveiled in 2019, I must admit that I wasn’t initially a fan of its design. The angular exterior reminded me of a poorly folded paper airplane from my childhood. However, I couldn’t help but be drawn to its unconventional look. The Cybertruck’s styling challenges traditional ideas of how a pickup truck should appear, with its sharp angles and refracting light creating a visually intriguing spectacle. It attracts attention wherever it’s parked, with children finding it fascinating, young adults appreciating its unique aesthetic, and older individuals scratching their heads in confusion. Opinions on its appearance vary widely, with some finding it hideous while others admire its originality.

For my Cybertruck, I have chosen to keep the stainless steel exterior untouched, appreciating the rawness and authenticity it brings. While some owners have wrapped their trucks in various colors and patterns, I prefer to maintain the vehicle’s originality. Perhaps, just to mess with people, I might add a small Holley carburetor sticker as a nod to my old-school roots.

In conclusion, as an analog guy in a digital world, the Tesla Cybertruck proved to be a surprising addition to my collection of vintage vehicles. Despite my initial reservations, the performance, comfort, and unique features of the Cybertruck have won me over. While Tesla could improve its communication during the ordering process, the driving experience and bold design of the Cybertruck make it a one-of-a-kind electric vehicle that combines the best of both worlds: modern innovation and old-school charm.
