A parliamentary petition calling for the revocation of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship has gained significant traction, with over 150,000 signatures from Canadians across the country. The petition, initiated by British Columbia resident and author Qualia Reed, is sponsored by New Democratic Party (NDP) MP Charlie Angus. It argues that Musk has engaged in activities that are detrimental to Canada’s national interests, including his close ties with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The petition, launched on February 20, states: “We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Prime Minister to revoke Elon Musk’s dual citizenship status and revoke his Canadian passport effective immediately.” Musk, who was born in South Africa, obtained Canadian citizenship through his mother, who was born in Saskatchewan.
Accusations of Interference in Canadian Affairs
The petition alleges that Musk has used his influence and wealth to interfere in Canadian elections and align himself with a foreign government seeking to undermine Canada’s sovereignty. Specifically, it claims Musk has been acting as an adviser to Trump, who has repeatedly threatened Canada’s economic and political stability. Trump has made statements about imposing steep tariffs on Canadian goods and has even joked about annexing Canada as the 51st U.S. state.

Musk has also drawn criticism for his social media activity. He has publicly endorsed Canada’s Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre and criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him an “insufferable tool” on his platform, X (formerly Twitter). His involvement in U.S. politics, particularly as Trump’s so-called “cost-cutting chief,” has raised concerns among many Canadians who see his influence as a threat to their country’s independence.
Surging Support and Parliamentary Process
The petition quickly surpassed the required 500 signatures necessary for certification, with the number of supporters skyrocketing in just a few days. By Sunday evening, over 157,000 Canadians had signed, and the number continues to grow. Once the petition closes on June 20, it will be formally presented in the House of Commons, requiring a government response.
Despite its overwhelming support, there is no indication that the Canadian government will take action against Musk’s citizenship. Parliamentary e-petitions, while useful in drawing attention to public concerns, do not legally obligate the government to enact policy changes.
Trump, Musk, and Canada’s Sovereignty
Musk’s role in the Trump administration has further fueled fears about his impact on Canadian politics. Since returning to office for a second term on January 20, Trump has pushed aggressive economic policies, including threats to impose new tariffs on Canada. Reports suggest Musk is playing a significant role in Trump’s government, particularly in efforts to reduce federal spending.
Trump has also repeatedly mocked Canada’s status as an independent nation, referring to Trudeau as a “governor” rather than a prime minister. These remarks, combined with Musk’s support for Trump’s policies, have intensified calls for the Canadian government to distance itself from the billionaire.

As the petition continues to gain signatures, Canada’s House of Commons is set to resume on March 24. However, a potential general election could shift the political landscape before MPs return to address the issue.
