TV show guest faces backlash for calling Pakistani women ‘uneducated’

Adeem claimed that "95 per cent of the women in Pakistan were ignorant," elaborating that these women are knowledgeable about dance, cooking, and makeup but lack awareness of Islam.

Internet personality Sahil Adeem faced backlash on social media for his remarks during an appearance on Samaa Digital’s show “Makalma” with Khalil ur Rehman Qamar, hosted by Ayesha Jahanzeb. Adeem claimed that “95 per cent of the women in Pakistan were ignorant,” elaborating that these women are knowledgeable about dance, cooking, and makeup but lack awareness of Islam. He questioned how mosques could mobilize these women.

During the discussion on human and women’s rights, particularly the role of social media in highlighting these issues, Adeem also asserted that in a sample of 100 people from Pakistan, 25 men would be ignorant, 50 would have moderate knowledge, and 25 would be well-informed.

A Q&A session at the end of the show featured a participant who demanded an apology from Adeem for his comments about women. The exchange went viral on social media. Adeem responded by emphasizing that it is an Islamic duty to call an ignorant person ignorant, suggesting the participant conduct a test to prove his point. He apologized to God for his “ignorant daughter,” a term he used to refer to the woman asking the question, which further fueled the controversy.

The viral clip also showed writer Qamar asking the host to take the microphone away from the woman for confronting Adeem.

Journalist Absa Komal criticized Adeem and Qamar on social media, expressing disgust at their fan following and calling out their misogynistic mindsets. Actor Mira Sethi praised the woman in the crowd for her courage in demanding an apology from Adeem, commending her bravery.
