U.S. Cancels Student Visas, Including Pakistanis, Over Foreign Policy Criticism

The U.S. has revoked visas of over 400 international students, including Pakistanis, following a new policy targeting social media activity critical of the U.S. or Israel.

The United States has abruptly revoked the visas of over 400 international students, including several from Pakistan, sparking concerns among American universities and prompting them to demand clarification from the government.

According to U.S. media outlets, the new policy introduces heightened scrutiny of the social media activity of individuals applying for student visas. The New York Times reported that on March 25, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a directive instructing diplomats to closely examine the social media profiles of visa applicants—especially those who have voiced criticism of the United States or Israel.

Rubio stated that the goal of this policy is to prevent individuals who express dissenting views on American foreign policy from entering the country. In a separate measure, Rubio also announced the cancellation of all U.S. visas granted to citizens of South Sudan, citing the country’s failure to cooperate in repatriating its nationals as the reason for the crackdown.

He further cautioned that if the Trump administration intends to deport a foreign national, their home country must assist in facilitating their return; failure to do so will result in visa restrictions and stricter immigration policies.
