UK expands eVisa system to include new biometric applicants

The transition will see the gradual elimination of physical documents such as BRPs, vignette stickers, and wet ink stamps.

The United Kingdom (UK) is taking significant strides towards a fully digital immigration process by expanding its eVisa system to new biometric applicants. This shift, announced in a press release on Friday, marks a key phase in the UK’s broader plan to modernize its immigration system, phasing out traditional physical documents in favor of a streamlined online status.

Transition to a Digital Immigration System

The transition will see the gradual elimination of physical documents such as Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs), vignette stickers, and wet ink stamps. These will be replaced by an online immigration status that can be accessed through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. This digital transformation is designed to enhance security and make the visa process more efficient.

For individuals granted visas to stay in the UK for more than six months, such as for work or study, the creation of a UKVI online account will be mandatory. This account will serve as a secure online record of their immigration status. On the other hand, tourists and others who receive visas for less than six months are not required to set up an account, simplifying the process for short-term visitors.

Benefits for Travelers

UK High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott, emphasized that this new digital approach will make it easier for Pakistanis and other nationals to travel to the UK. “We are constantly innovating to make it easier for Pakistanis to travel to the UK. This new use of technology will streamline a key part of the visa process, making it more secure and reducing the reliance on paper documents,” she said.

The British High Commission in Islamabad also assured that the process is free, secure, and straightforward. Detailed guidance on creating and using a UKVI account is available on the UK government’s official website.

Continued Validity of BRP Cards

Despite the move towards eVisas, BRP cards will remain valid until December 31, 2024. Travelers are advised to continue carrying their BRP cards along with their passports when traveling abroad to confirm their right to re-enter the UK. The high commission clarified that updating to an eVisa does not alter the immigration status or the conditions of entry or stay in the UK.

The UK government advises that travelers should not proceed to the UK until they have received their passport and valid visa from the Visa Application Centre (VAC). This precaution is necessary to ensure a smooth entry process and to avoid any potential complications.
