UNRWA Reports One Child in Gaza Killed Every Hour by Israel

Over 14,500 Palestinian children have been killed in Gaza amid Israel's ongoing war, with global silence enabling the continuation of genocide and war crimes.

The numbers are staggering, but they fail to capture the full horror of the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza. According to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), at least 14,500 Palestinian children have been killed since the war began last year. In a statement released this week, the UN agency described a harrowing reality: “One child gets killed every hour. These are not numbers. These are lives cut short.”

Children who survive the bombardment are left to wander through the rubble, their futures obliterated. They are scarred physically, emotionally, and psychologically—an entire generation denied education, stability, and hope. “Deprived of learning, boys and girls in Gaza sift through the rubble,” the UNRWA emphasized, warning that time is running out to salvage their futures.

The toll on Gaza’s children is not merely collateral damage—it is a deliberate consequence of a war waged with unrelenting brutality. The relentless airstrikes, targeting civilian infrastructure, have left schools in ruins and children digging for scraps where their homes once stood. This devastation is not an unintended consequence; it is a war strategy designed to dismantle a society from its very roots.

Since the onset of this war, over 45,300 Palestinians—the majority of them women and children—have been killed, with another 107,700 injured, according to Gaza’s health authorities. These numbers underscore the genocidal nature of the Israeli campaign.

The atrocities have drawn global condemnation, including from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Arrest warrants have been issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for crimes against humanity and war crimes in Gaza. Yet, the world’s most powerful nations, particularly the United States, remain steadfast in their support for Israel, shielding it from accountability while millions suffer.

As international institutions investigate Israel’s actions, they face a sobering reality: the scale of destruction in Gaza cannot be undone by legal mechanisms alone. The ongoing siege has displaced thousands, while the psychological scars inflicted on survivors may take generations to heal—if healing is even possible under the continued blockade and aggression.

The International Silence on Genocide

Despite calls for an immediate ceasefire by the UN Security Council, Israel has continued its assault with impunity, backed by unwavering Western support. The UNRWA’s commissioner-general, Philippe Lazzarini, stated bluntly that Gaza has become one of the most horrific places on earth for children. According to a study by the War Child Alliance, 92% of Palestinian children surveyed “cannot accept reality,” while 79% experience persistent nightmares and 73% exhibit signs of aggression.

These statistics lay bare the catastrophic mental toll of the war. Helen Pattinson, CEO of War Child UK, noted, “This is not just about the destruction of hospitals, schools, and homes. It’s about invisible yet devastating wounds inflicted on innocent children who bear no responsibility for this conflict.”

Adding insult to injury, Israel’s actions have attracted charges of genocide at the ICJ, a grim but necessary reminder that what is happening in Gaza is not merely a conflict but an orchestrated effort to eradicate a people. Yet, the international community’s response has been shamefully muted. The double standards are glaring: while Western nations rally to impose sanctions or intervene in conflicts elsewhere, Gaza’s suffering is met with deafening silence.

The killing of children can never be justified, and yet, Gaza’s children continue to die, one every hour, as the world watches in complicit silence. These are not statistics; they are lives stolen, futures obliterated, and a people systematically erased. The international community has failed Gaza, choosing political alliances over humanity.

If there is any hope left, it lies in breaking this cycle of indifference and holding Israel accountable for its crimes. Until then, the children of Gaza will remain forgotten, their cries drowned out by the roar of fighter jets and the silence of a world that refuses to act.
