US Airman sentenced to 15 years for leaking classified Pentagon documents

The leaks, which surfaced in 2022, have been deemed one of the most significant intelligence breaches in recent U.S. history.

Jack Teixeira, a former Massachusetts Air National Guardsman, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for leaking highly classified Pentagon documents online. The leaks, which surfaced in 2022, have been deemed one of the most significant intelligence breaches in recent U.S. history.

Historic Leak

Teixeira, 22, worked as a cyber defense operations journeyman at Otis Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts. Despite his low rank of airman first class, he held top-secret security clearance, giving him access to sensitive U.S. intelligence. Over the course of a year, Teixeira shared hundreds of classified documents on Discord, a social media platform popular with gamers. These documents included maps, satellite images, and intelligence on Ukraine’s defense capabilities, U.S. military aid strategies, and surveillance operations on allies like Israel and South Korea.

Prosecutors described the leak as one of the most significant violations of the Espionage Act in American history. The case raised serious questions about how someone in Teixeira’s position could access and disseminate such critical information unchecked.

The Fallout

The leaked documents had far-reaching consequences. They exposed U.S. concerns about Ukraine’s ability to counter Russia’s invasion and revealed intelligence-gathering methods that could compromise future operations. Some of the information even made its way to pro-Kremlin Telegram channels, raising fears about its use by adversaries.

Teixeira’s actions prompted the Pentagon to review its protocols for safeguarding classified information. The U.S. Air Force has disciplined 15 personnel and removed Colonel Sean Riley, the commander of Teixeira’s unit, from his post.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

Teixeira was arrested by the FBI in April 2023 and pleaded guilty in March 2024 to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information under the Espionage Act. Prosecutors sought a 16.5-year sentence to deter future breaches, emphasizing the potential harm to U.S. personnel and global alliances.

U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani handed down a 15-year sentence, citing Teixeira’s deliberate actions despite being warned about handling classified material. “You posted on the internet hundreds of documents over the period of a year,” Talwani said.

Ahead of sentencing, Teixeira apologized, stating, “I’m sorry for all of the harm that I’ve brought… all the responsibility and consequences fall on my shoulders alone.”

Defense Arguments

Teixeira’s lawyers requested an 11-year sentence, highlighting his autism, social isolation, and lack of malicious intent. They argued that he naively believed he could trust his friends on Discord and aimed to educate them about world events, including the Ukraine war.

The leak has not only caused immediate damage but has also created lasting concerns. Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy said, “We won’t know the full extent of Jack Teixeira’s damage for several years.” Intelligence experts warn that such breaches could strain international relations and compromise future U.S. operations.
