US strongly condemns killing of journalist Arshad Sharif

The US also demanded a full investigation by the Government of Kenya into Arshad Sharif’s death. 

The United States has condemned the killing of senior journalist Arshad Sharif in Nairobi and demanded of the Kenyan government to carry out an investigation into the matter.

According to the details, the US State Department spokesperson Ned Price while briefing the media in Washington said that they are deeply saddened by the death of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif. Ned Price said the US demands a full investigation by the Government of Kenya into the incident.

“We’re deeply saddened by the death of Arshad Sharif. We encourage a full investigation by the Government of Kenya into his death. It’s not entirely clear that we know all the circumstances at this point regarding what led to his death, but we do urge a full investigation,” the US spokesperson said on the killing of Arshad Sharif.

Ned Price also said that we fully believe in the protection of journalists and the right to freedom of expression and added that USAID has a number of programs to work with governments around the world to bolster those rights, to bolster independent media.

“And it’s clear through his work that Arshad Sharif was dedicated to that fundamental right of freedom of expression – took him around the world. His work was known around the world,” he said.

Arshad Sharif’s death sent shockwaves across Pakistan

One of Pakistan’s leading journalists, Arshad Sharif, was shot dead in Kenya’s Nairobi city early Monday. The Kenyan police claimed that it was a case of “mistaken identity”.

The killing of Arshad Sharif has sent shockwaves across Pakistan as he was a very popular journalist and anchorperson. Condolences poured in from colleagues and politicians on the journalist’s death. The civic society in Pakistan has expressed shock over the death. Moreover, the international community has also condemned the killing.

The Kenyan President also expressed regret over the death of the senior journalist and assured that the demands of justice will be met. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed to the President of Kenya the serious concern over the incident on behalf of the Pakistani nation and the media community. In response, the Kenyan President promised to send an investigation report on the incident soon.
