Meta is facing growing backlash over its social media platform, Threads, where users are reporting that their accounts are being deleted or restricted without clear reason. Dubbed “Threads Moderation Failures,” the issue has sparked widespread frustration as users claim they are being penalized for minor infractions, with some losing years of data and connections. Meta’s automated moderation system appears to be at the heart of the controversy, flagging content incorrectly and issuing bans too quickly, leaving users feeling unfairly targeted.
User Complaints and High-Profile Bans
In recent weeks, several users have reported that their Threads and Instagram accounts were banned or restricted without clear justification. One staff member at The Verge was banned for allegedly being underage, despite being an adult. Another staffer found their account restricted after posting a joke saying, “I want to die,” in response to a heatwave. Such examples have fueled concerns that Meta’s moderation system is overly sensitive and punishing users unjustly.

Meta’s automated moderation system seems to be making questionable decisions at an alarming rate. According to Jorge Caballero, a user who claims to have been wrongly flagged, the system incorrectly classifies posts as political or controversial, even when they contain factual information about events like hurricanes. This issue has also surfaced on Instagram, where users have been banned for allegedly being “under 13” even when they are much older. Appeals for account recovery have been largely unsuccessful, and many users have lost years of data and connections.
Adam Mosseri’s Response
Adam Mosseri, head of both Instagram and Threads, has taken note of the growing discontent. He has responded to several complaints on Threads, promising that the issues are being investigated. However, despite his assurances, the problem appears widespread, with no immediate resolution in sight.
Some users, including social media consultant Matt Navarra, have received personal responses from Mosseri regarding their complaints. Navarra’s Threads account was downranked after sharing a story about a Meta-related hoax, and his post was flagged by Meta’s system. In response, Mosseri simply said, “Looking into it,” without offering any further explanation.

The underlying cause of these moderation issues appears to be linked to Meta’s automated systems. These systems, designed to filter harmful or inappropriate content, are making errors that result in unwarranted bans and restrictions. The most alarming aspect is the apparent failure of Meta to review these automated decisions adequately, leading to permanent data loss for some users.
