WATCH: Babar Azam booed, trolled by fans in Australia

Pakistani skipper targeted by fans over poor performance as videos of verbal abuse go viral online.

Former skipper of the Pakistan Cricket Team Babar Azam was mercilessly heckled and trolled by a group of fans during the second T20I match between Pakistan and Australia. The incident happened at Sydney Cricket Stadium.

Videos of passing rude comments against the batter went viral on social media. The incident happened during the match when the player was standing in the field on the boundary during the Australian innings. The crowd verbally abused him and asked him to leave the T20 side of the team.

Azam ignored him to focus on the fielding. The chants included calls for Azam’s removal from the T20 team, citing his poor performance in the first two matches of the series where he only managed to score single digits. A group of fans taunted him, shouting, “Have some shame, (T20 mein teri jagah nahi banti) you have no place in T20s, go back to Pakistan.”

Visibly irritated with the chant, Babar Azam turned back to give the group of fans an angry look. This further encouraged the fans and they chanted at him “to stare again”. Fans accused him of dropping catches and merely clapping for other fielders.

One of Australia’s cricket accounts shared the video with the caption: “Can anyone translate into English what the fans are saying to Babar Azam? I think someone is saying something bad.”

The first match played for seven overs each side was also won by Australia. Usman Khan and Irfan Khan Niazi were the star performers for Pakistan. Khan scored 50 and Irfan Niazi scored 30 runs for the team in chase of 148 runs. Pakistani bowlers staged a strong comeback to restrict the Australian team to 148 runs who once looked to cross the 200-run mark.
