WhatsApp is currently testing a significant upgrade to its interface, introducing a feature that allows users to mention contacts directly in their status updates. This feature, available to select beta testers through version 2.24.20.3 on the Google Play Beta Program, aims to enhance communication and engagement within the app.
How the Mention Feature Works
According to WABetaInfo, the feature enables users to tag specific contacts in their status updates by using a new ‘@’ button located within the caption bar when sharing a photo or video. Once a contact is mentioned, they receive a notification and a message in their chat informing them of the mention. This personalized interaction ensures that the mentioned contact will see the status update, even if they are excluded from viewing other updates due to privacy settings.

The feature is private by design. Other viewers of the status update will not see the mentioned contact, ensuring confidentiality. This privacy-focused approach ensures that interactions remain discreet between the sender and the mentioned contact, allowing users to share important updates without exposing contact details to the rest of their audience.
Overriding Privacy Settings
One of the most notable aspects of this feature is its ability to override the sender’s privacy settings. Normally, WhatsApp users can control who views their status updates through customized privacy configurations. However, when a contact is mentioned in a status update, they will receive it regardless of these settings. This guarantees that mentioned individuals will not miss crucial updates, even if they were previously excluded from other status posts.
Resharing with Privacy Protection
In addition to receiving notifications, mentioned contacts can reshare the status update with their own audience. A dedicated reshare button appears within the status screen, making it easy for users to distribute content they find relevant. Interestingly, when the status is reshared, the identity of the original creator remains private. Viewers of the reshared content will not be able to trace the update back to its origin, preserving the privacy of the original sender.
This functionality contrasts with other social media platforms, such as Instagram, where reshared content often links back to the original creator. WhatsApp’s approach emphasizes privacy, allowing reshared content to be distributed without compromising the identity of the person who initially posted the status.
Testing and Availability
WhatsApp has been developing this feature for several months, with initial reports of its development emerging in March 2024. It is currently available to a limited group of beta testers using the latest version of WhatsApp beta for Android. As testing progresses, the feature is expected to roll out to more users over the coming weeks.
The introduction of this feature is seen as part of WhatsApp’s broader effort to enhance its user interface and provide more customizable communication tools. By allowing users to mention contacts in status updates, WhatsApp is offering a more direct and personal way to engage with specific individuals within a broader audience.
