WhatsApp to simplify channel discovery with QR codes in future update

Users can preview the QR code feature in WhatsApp beta version 2.24.22.20, accessible through the Google Play Beta Program.

Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp has announced it is working on a new feature that will enable users to discover and follow channels with ease through QR codes. This update, currently being developed, is expected to make connecting to channels more efficient and engaging, particularly in social settings, according to details shared by WABetaInfo.

Seamless Sharing Through QR Codes

The new feature will introduce a dedicated section for channel owners to generate and share QR codes linked to their channels. This development will allow users to quickly access and follow a channel by simply scanning a QR code displayed by the channel owner. As opposed to sharing traditional invite links, QR codes offer a simpler and more direct approach to connecting people to channels.

Using a QR code instead of a link is especially useful when sharing a channel in person. Instead of requiring users to open and navigate a link, they can scan the code directly from the screen, which will instantly redirect them to the channel. Once there, they can view its content and follow it with just one tap, enhancing the immediacy and spontaneity of the sharing process.

Ideal for Social Settings

This QR code feature is expected to be particularly beneficial in face-to-face social situations, such as gatherings, events, or meetups. Channel owners can easily share access by showing a QR code on their device, removing the need to send links via digital communication. This will simplify the process, making it more accessible and engaging in real-life interactions. Users can quickly discover and follow channels without the hassle of copying and pasting links or navigating different menus.

WhatsApp’s Latest Beta Update

Users can preview the QR code feature in WhatsApp beta version 2.24.22.20, accessible through the Google Play Beta Program. This feature is currently in development, with plans to be included in an official update soon.

The QR code enhancement is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to improve the user experience. Recently, WhatsApp added a shortcut in the updates tab to help users locate channels more quickly and moved the channel creation option to a different menu to create a more streamlined interface.

In addition to the QR code update, WhatsApp is testing a “Get link info on Google” feature in its beta version. This tool allows users to verify the authenticity of links shared in chats by searching for link information on Google. The feature aims to help users avoid scams by providing easy access to link verification.
