Woman dies after being set on fire in New York subway train

Police are still working to establish a possible motive for the attack. No charges have yet been filed.

A woman dies in New York City after being set on fire on Sunday in a subway train. The woman died after the man set her clothes on fire. Authorities have called this a “brutal murder” and a “depraved behavior”.

The suspect was arrested at another subway station in Manhattan about eight hours after the attack, police said. A man has been arrested in Brooklyn.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described Sunday’s incident as “one of the most depraved crimes one person could commit against another human being”.

She said the woman was on a stationary F train when a man approached her with a lighter to ignite her clothing. Within seconds, the fire engulfed in a matter of seconds.

Although officers extinguished the flames, the victim died at the scene. Police are still working to establish a possible motive for the attack. No charges have yet been filed.

Police further stated that the woman was motionless when she was set on fire. The victim and the culprit did not interact before the incident and possibly did not know each other.

Ms Tisch said: “Officers were on patrol on an upper level of that station, smelled and saw smoke and went to investigate. What they saw was a person standing inside the train car fully engulfed in flames.”

The man got off the train as police officers on patrol rushed to the station. “Unbeknownst to the officers who responded, the suspect had stayed on the scene and was seated on a bench on the platform just outside the train car,” Ms Tisch said.

Police obtained clear imagery of the suspect from the body-worn cameras of the responding officers. Later, police were informed that the suspect had been found on another subway train.

“I want to thank the young people who called 911 to help,” Ms Tisch added. “They saw something, they said something and they did something,” she said furhter.
